Silksong Dev Clears Up Release Date Confusion After Xbox Showcase

Summary

  • Team Cherry confirmed Hollow Knight: Silksong’s release is not tied to the ROG Xbox Ally’s launch.
  • Silksong’s release date remains unknown, but the developer confirmed it will be out before Christmas.

A member of Team Cherry has confirmed that Hollow Knight: Silksong won’t be tied to the release of the freshly revealed ROG Xbox Ally. Hollow Knight: Silksong is arguably the most highly anticipated indie game yet to be released. Originating as a DLC for Hollow Knight, Silksong grew in size and scope to become its own game and was first revealed all the way back in 2019. Since then, it’s had sparse appearances at showcases throughout the years, earning an elusive reputation and becoming somewhat of a “unicorn game.”

The Xbox Games Showcase went live on June 8 as part of Summer Game Fest and provided long looks at upcoming Xbox RPGs The Outer Worlds 2 and Clockwork Revolution, unveiled Double Fine’s next game Keeper, and even announced that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade and Final Fantasy 16 are both finally coming to Xbox. The showcase also unveiled the much-rumored ROG Xbox Ally handheld with Hollow Knight: Silksong playing on-screen. This was followed by an appearance by Xbox’s Sarah Bond, who proclaimed that Silksong would be “available at launch” when the device is released later in 2025. This led some to believe Silksong would serve as a ROG Xbox Ally launch title, causing confusion and frustration with Hollow Knight fans thinking Team Cherry has been holding the sequel’s release for the Xbox ROG handheld.

The Status of Hollow Knight’s Characters Leading to Silksong

There are many memorable characters in Hollow Knight’s cast, but only some of them have a chance of returning in the anticipated sequel, Silksong.

Team Cherry’s Marketing Manager, Matthew Griffin, has come forward in Hollow Knight: Silksong‘s official Discord server to clear the confusion surrounding the game’s Xbox showcase appearance. Griffin clarified that Team Cherry isn’t waiting for the ROG Xbox Ally’s launch to release Silksong, as it’s not tied to the device as a launch title. He went on to express that the long-awaited Hollow Knight follow-up will be out before the Holidays, specifically before Christmas day.

Hollow Knight: Silksong is Not a ROG Xbox Ally Launch Title

While Griffin’s clarification is helpful, Hollow Knight: Silksong‘s release date still remains a complete mystery. It seems like Team Cherry could be aiming for a Fall release, perhaps later in the season in either October or November. If one thing’s for certain, it’s that the game will be released before the ROG Xbox Ally, as Sarah Bond mentioned it’ll be playable on the device from day one. The ROG Xbox Ally’s Holiday window could pin it in late November, meaning an October or early November Silksong release seems most likely barring a surprise summer release.

As for when gamers might be able to learn more about the release dates of both Hollow Knight: Silksong and the ROG Xbox Ally, Gamescom’s Opening Night Live presentation in August may be the most likely destination. There’s also the possibility that Team Cherry reveals Silksong‘s release date on its own terms, the same for Xbox and its ROG handheld, so gamers should keep a keen eye on the social media of both Team Cherry and Xbox.
