Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is the next chapter in Hideo Kojima’s mind-bending post-apocalyptic tale. In the first game, protagonist Sam went on a journey across America to reconnect the country after the titular Death Stranding event, and this time around, Death Stranding 2 will dive even deeper into these themes of connection.
Until recently, Death Stranding 2 was poised to be one of the only major single-player games to close out the month of June. Granted, the month has been packed with releases. Between the launch of the Switch 2, Dune: Awakening, and FBC: Firebreak, June has featured plenty of exciting launches. However, Death Stranding 2 remained a major title waiting on the horizon, but now, the game has some unexpected competition with a five-year-old game: Cyberpunk 2077.

Death Stranding 2 Will Now Share a Release Date With Cyberpunk 2077’s 2.3 Update
Cyberpunk 2077 is Shaking Up June’s Lineup
- Death Stranding 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 2.3 are both set to be released on June 26.
Cyberpunk 2077‘s 2.0 update was brought to the game back in 2023, and it was a major milestone for the sci-fi RPG. It’s no secret that Cyberpunk 2077 launched in 2020 in a controversial state, but 2.0 was a significant overhaul for the game. Thanks to the 2.0 update, Cyberpunk 2077 was able to give players the game it was originally intended to be, and CD Projekt Red has continued to occasionally build upon the fix. This is now set to continue, as CD Projekt Red confirmed earlier this month that Cyberpunk 2077 2.3 is on the way, potentially giving Death Stranding 2 a solid competitor.
Cyberpunk 2077‘s sequel has entered its early stages of development. There has yet to be an official title revealed.
Death Stranding 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 Have Very Different Views of the Future
With Cyberpunk 2077‘s neon-filled, overcrowded world of crime and Death Stranding 2‘s vast landscapes that have been left barren, these two games have opposite visions of what a future Earth could look like. The world of Cyberpunk 2077 thrives on hedonism, while Death Stranding and its sequel hinge on the power of human connection.
These differences are bound to attract gamers with similarly different preferences, but there are likely to be sci-fi fans who were looking forward to Death Stranding 2 who may have now had their attention redirected to Cyberpunk 2077‘s upcoming content, especially if they already own the game.
This time around, Death Stranding 2 will leave America and head across the globe to Australia.
Of course, with Cyberpunk 2077 being five years old and Death Stranding 2 being a brand-new game, that also gives the latter a special edge. The two sci-fi titles have their own unique identities, which could potentially make it difficult to choose which one to dive into over the launch weekend. Right now, CD Projekt Red has yet to reveal what the 2.3 update has in store for players. The update could be filled with some simple tweaks, but there’s also the chance for CD Projekt Red to bring players unexpected content. For example, the 2.2 update surprised players with car customization, and that’s not exactly a small change.
June 26 is a Good Day for Sci-Fi Fans
Whether one is more excited about the freshness of Death Stranding 2 or Cyberpunk 2077 getting extra content, sci-fi lovers will have two exciting options to look forward to at the end of the month. Death Stranding 2 may be a new story, but Cyberpunk 2077 2.3 shows that there is still room for the RPG to evolve years after its launch, so it will be interesting to see how the two fare with the same release date.
