Crystal of Atlan is one of 2025’s standout MMORPG titles. The game features a magic-punk aesthetic that fuses spell-casting with tech gadgets in a world that feels like Arcane meets Genshin. There are two main gameplay modes: PvE, where players can grind through solo story quests and defeat various monsters and bosses; and PvP, where players can jump into 1v1 duels or 3v3 team battles against one another.

PvP unlocks around the end of Main Quest Chapter 2, but the game never forces multiplayer onto its players. Players, therefore, can continue leveling, farming materials, and unlocking gear entirely through solo content. But the choice between engaging in PvP or staying focused on PvE from there comes down to more than just preference. For starters, engaging in PvP or focusing purely on PvE in Crystal of Atlan can significantly alter progression, the game’s meta, pacing, and access to certain high-tier rewards.

The Case For Engaging in Crystal of Atlan PvP

One thing Crystal of Atlan PVP gets right that most MMORPG titles don’t is equalized gear scaling. This feature scales gear in PvP so that everyone is on a level playing field. It effectively nullifies any pay-to-win leverage and prevents whales from steamrolling the arena just because they dropped real money on mythic-tier armor. Also, this ensures that new players aren’t at a disadvantage simply because an opponent has progressed further in PvE. PvE also requires in-game stamina to keep playing. The multiplayer mode provides an alternative gameplay loop for when daily stamina is depleted.

While the Crystal of Atlan PvP content is free of any pay-to-win mechanics, the game leans heavily on microtransactions in its PvE systems. For example, the pets offered through the battle pass are much more powerful than the free ones. In the later parts of the game, the bosses are extremely difficult to beat without these gacha pets. The game also pushes players to buy a monthly card. Without it, players’ market reputation level is reset weekly. They need to grind dungeons just to unlock basic trading privileges again, and dungeon entries require stamina. A free player gets a max of 10 stamina for dungeon entries, which caps out fast if they’re farming materials or gear. In contrast, monthly cardholders get 140 stamina. This disparity makes it tough for free-to-play players to stay competitive in PvE progression.

Crystal of Atlan‘s core PvE content includes dungeon runs with set enemy patterns and adventure bosses that follow predictable mechanics. While this makes PvE beginner-friendly, it becomes easy to win after the first couple of dungeon runs. On the other hand, PvP breaks that predictability. Human opponents think, bait, and react in real time, which turns even a short 1v1 duel into a skill-based mind game that is infinitely more engaging than static AI battles.

For players who primarily care about PvE, PvP rewards often feel disconnected from their goals. Gear and currency earned in PvP don’t carry over to PvE, so spending hours in ranked matches doesn’t help the PvE character progress or farm materials faster. Also, not all PvP content is gear-equalized, and activities like Mine Wars pull stats from the players’ dungeon gear, which reintroduces power gaps and favors players with maxed-out Crystal of Atlan PvE builds. Additionally, server-wide PvP chat is often toxic.

New players get called out for queueing with non-meta builds or making misplays, especially in ranked 3v3. There are also several class balance issues in the multiplayer mode. CoA Classes like Starbreaker and Scytheguard dominate the top ladder due to fast burst combos and crowd-control immunity. Meanwhile, PvE favorites like Warlock are largely unusable in PvP; they can’t keep up with speed builds and get hard-countered at close range. Ultimately, if a player’s focus remains solely on PvE, there’s minimal incentive to jump into PvP. But for those who want something more than just beating up the same old computer bosses, then PvP is exactly where they’ll find it.
