Cyberpunk 2077’s 2.3 Update Opens a Pandora’s Box the Game Can’t Close

Cyberpunk 2077 looks like it may still have more in it. Cyberpunk 2077‘s roller-coaster launch was famously riddled with technical woes that largely overshadowed the surrounding conversation, and had developer CD Projekt Red scrambling to fix the issues and regain the goodwill and reputation it had acquired from its previous popular title, The Witcher 3. In the ensuing years, CP2077 received multiple updates and hotfixes, capped off in 2023 with the massive 2.0 patch alongside the well-received Phantom Liberty DLC. Close to five years after its initial release, the title has now settled into a steady and satisfying state while CDPR has been turning its attention towards its next major projects.

But in an unexpected move, the studio recently announced that Cyberpunk 2077 will be getting the 2.3 update. What makes this more notable is that CDPR had previously explicitly said that it wouldn’t be putting out any more CP2077 content. Now that things have changed, though, this opens up a whole new can of worms. This move could lead to more content drops down the line, and perhaps even tie into Cyberpunk 2 (widely known by its codename, Project Orion) to keep the hype train going and players coming back ahead of the sequel.

Cyberpunk 2077’s 2.3 Update Sets a Precedent That’s Hard For it to Undo

Cyberpunk 2077’s Updates Were Supposedly ‘Finished’ Before 2.3 Was Announced

While there were various updates released before it, Cyberpunk 2077‘s 2.0 patch was one that marked the biggest leap and was largely responsible for finally bringing all the title’s prior promises in line with the developer’s intent and player standards. Combined with The Phantom Liberty DLC, which provided a thrilling new storyline and showed off side of Cyberpunk 2077‘s world and lore that was only hinted at around the edges in the base campaign, it was assumed at the time that 2.0 would naturally be the final update.

However, CD Projekt Red continued to release additional, albeit more minor ones, afterward that further polished and tweaked various elements. It then tapped Virtuous, a studio known for its quality work in assisting other well-known developers, to take the lead on the 2.2 update that dropped last December. Finally, in March of this year, CDPR firmly stated that it was finished with Cyberpunk 2077 and that most team members were moving onto The Witcher 4. But fans got a surprise this past June 5 when CDPR revealed in a livestream that another update, 2.3, is scheduled to drop on June 26, with it set to host another stream later in the month to show off more. It appears then that Cyberpunk 2077 still has fuel in the tank.

Cyberpunk 2077 Could Now See Further Updates Right Up Until its Sequel

CD Projek Red is now hard at work on The Witcher 4, while a smaller team is known to have started early production on Cyberpunk 2077‘s sequel. But given the above situation, the door is now open for it to follow up with still more updates for the first title. While it’s yet unclear what exactly 2.3 will entail, CDPR could potentially include hints and teases in it about Cyberpunk 2, and could go as far as to directly tie or lead into the sequel somehow. It’s also suspected that Virtuous may actually be working on another major DLC for Cyberpunk 2077, and although unconfirmed at this time, the possibility exists.

By contradicting its previous statements regarding Cyberpunk 2077‘s future updates, CD Projekt Red has now upended expectations and created the potential for it to receive more content throughout the time ahead of Project Orion. These could be things like its Balatro crossover or even more substantial items such as the ones mentioned above. Of course, 2.3 could also end up being the truly final update. Time will tell, but given the situation, it seems like it’s harder now for CDPR to walk back from it, and could end up surprising players again with more Cyberpunk 2077 content even as it continues to gear up for The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2.
