Meta Quest Lead Issues Response to Update v77 Bug Complaints

The CTO of Meta, Andrew Bosworth, has issued an official response to widespread reports from gamers and developers of significant bugs emerging with the v77 Meta Quest update. The v77 Meta Quest update began rolling out several weeks ago, and some players are fed up with the state of it.

Back in May, Bosworth responded to recent complaints regarding some of the changes made to Meta Quest headsets, including FPS rates being limited in Battery Saver mode. Bosworth acknowledged the issues and thanked the community and developers for their feedback, explaining that the problems would be fixed, and that a stronger process of quality control would be put in place for future updates. However, developers are now complaining that they’re seeing the opposite.

Meta Quest 4 Leak Suggests We Are Going to Be Waiting a Long Time for the Next VR Headset

A pair of leakers indicate that the Meta Quest 4 is a lot further off than fans might like, but there could be something new in the works at Meta.

Following the release of Meta Quest’s v77 update, some users and developers have been complaining that a number of issues have popped up, including audio cutting out in passthrough mode, audio crackling in general, MediaCodec freezes, and more. The developer of Virtual Desktop, Guy Godin, tweeted at Bosworth pointing out these issues, and accused the team of ignoring the PTC reports prior to the rollout and releasing it anyway. In an AMA held by Bosworth, he acknowledged the anger that had been directed in his and Meta’s direction, and admitted that the developers had reason to be angry.

In the AMA, Bosworth admits that a number of these issues were seen in PTC, but that the company chose to go on with its release anyway, as they allegedly weren’t impacting “a huge number of people.” He claims that he cares about the devs and users impacted by the bugs, and that the team is working on fixes, but some of it is stymied by the need for firmware updates from Qualcomm, as the Meta Quest 3 uses a Qualcomm chipset. He added that he couldn’t go into specifics, but that “there’s a bunch of reasons we had to proceed,” with “some benefits and some costs.” He adds that his commitment to fixing the problems and improving quality control are still on the table.

For now, all Meta Quest users can do is wait for an update that will fix these issues. Frustrating the developers responsible for creating Meta Quest games and apps isn’t something Meta wants to do, as it could drive some away from creating for the platform. While players themselves are also experiencing problems, at the very least, the issues that arose with the v77 update aren’t as severe as the December 2024 update that bricked some Meta Quest headsets.
