Sea of Remnants Means Sea of Thieves Can’t Rest on its Laurels

Sea of Remnants was one of the many games announced at the June 4 Sony State of Play. However, what sets this particular title apart from the others is that Sea of Remnants looks to be a thrilling new pirate adventure. Over the years, pirate games have been sparse. Of course, Sea of Thieves, Skull and Bones, Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, and the Monkey Island franchise offer gamers a taste of pirate life, but Sea of Remnants looks to be a breath of fresh air.

There may be a few pirate-based games out there, but Sea of Thieves has definitely been ahead of the competition. Developer Rare’s online sea-faring adventure has brought players fun-filled gameplay since 2018, but the lack of a true competitor has also potentially left the game feeling too comfortable. Granted, Sea of Thieves features the occasional crossover and still has a solid player base, but Sea of Remnants could kickstart a new era for Rare’s pirate tale.

Sony’s State of Play announced several exciting games coming to the PlayStation soon.

Sea of Remnants Could Prove to Be Sea of Thieves’ First Real Competitor

Two Sides of the Same Doubloon

There are some stark differences between Sea of Thieves and Sea of Remnants, but there are also plenty of similarities to take note of. One of the biggest differences is that while Sea of Thieves is an online multiplayer game, Sea of Remnants has been labeled as an MMO on its official Steam page. For those wanting a larger online experience, Sea of Remnants could have a major leg up on Sea of Thieves.

Where the two games find common ground, though, is a clear understanding of what makes pirate life so much fun. Beyond that, both titles have charming, eye-catching aesthetics. Sea of Thieves boasts its own stylized characters and world that has a special charm, but Sea of Remnants‘ puppet-inspired universe is incredibly compelling. Both games could easily draw players in simply because of how pleasing they look from a design perspective, but if Sea of Remnants offers a stronger pirate world, Sea of Thieves may need to be prepared to double down on content.

Like Sea of Thieves, Sea of Remnants also features a dynamic weather system, making a player’s journey across the seas a unique experience every time.

Sea of Thieves’ Past Success Doesn’t Guarantee Future Victory

Granted, even though Sea of Thieves hasn’t featured as many crossovers and special events as other live-service titles, the game definitely isn’t lacking content. Sea of Thieves is all about the journey, but potentially having some real competition could require a shake-up to the game’s formula.

Sea of Remnants seems to lean far more into fantasy elements, which could potentially pull in a lot of fans of that genre, as well. Sea of Thieves features plenty of mythical creatures, like the Merfolk and the infamous Kraken, but Sea of Remnants might be turning the dial up on these types of legends.

Sea of Remnants will be a free-to-play game.

Sea of Thieves Has a Little More Time to Prepare for the Competition

  • Sea of Remnants will be released for the PS5, PC, iOS, and Android in 2026.
  • An official release date has yet to be revealed.

Right now, there’s no telling precisely when Sea of Remnants will arrive, but that at least gives Sea of Thieves plenty of time to be ready for its launch. For seven years, Sea of Thieves has stayed on top of the pirate-based genre, so Sea of Remnants‘ attempt at one-upping Rare’s title is no easy task. If Sea of Remnants happens to play as good as it looks, though, Sea of Thieves may have to find more ways to set itself apart in order to keep players engaged.
