The legendary Master Sword, present in just about every mainline Zelda game, can be found less than halfway through The Wind Waker, especially if you take side content into account for the game’s length. In The Wind Waker, the Master Sword location is hidden deep under the sea, and you will have to fulfill some story requirements to reach it.

To get the Master Sword, The Wind Waker players must complete the game’s first three dungeons, then traverse below the ocean via a portal. This guide explains how to get the Master Sword and what the Master Sword does in Zelda: The Wind Waker.
Wind Waker Master Sword Special Effects & Mechanics
The Master Sword is a strict upgrade over the regular Hero’s Sword you have been using up to the point when you get the Master Sword. The Wind Waker players will essentially be able to deal twice the amount of damage as the Hero’s Sword and can hit enemies from further away.
Unlike other versions of the sword, it does not shoot out a laser beam forward when swung at max Hearts.
When acquired, the Master Sword is not at its full strength, and Link must embark on a quest to restore its power to repel Evil. However, it still does twice the damage of the Hero’s Sword in this unpowered state.
How To Get The Master Sword In Zelda: The Wind Waker
First, Finish The Tower Of The Gods
The Tower of the Gods is the third major dungeon in Zelda: The Wind Waker if we don’t count the initial encounter at the Forsaken Fortress. After you beat Dragon Roost Island and the Forbidden Woods, follow the main story and you will eventually unlock the location of the Tower of the Gods.

When you finish this dungeon, a portal will appear just outside the entrance to the Tower. Continue to follow the story, and you will be sent through this portal below the ocean to the Mysterious Castle.
Solve The Triforce Puzzle In The Underwater Castle
When you arrive in the Mysterious Castle, the whole world is essentially stuck in stasis. Walk into the castle and you’ll see numerous members of Ganon’s forces frozen in time. Walk down the central stairway and past the rubble and you will see a large Triforce symbol on the ground.
In the immediate area surrounding the Triforce symbol you should see three large blocks in the shape of each triangle in the Triforce. Walk up to each of these pieces and pull them until they align with each of the triangles that make up the Triforce symbol.
The Triforce symbol will suck in the blocks and glow with a bright golden hue, then the statue at the top of the stairs will move backward and reveal a stairway down.
Continue Below Hyrule Castle To Find The Master Sword
Take the revealed stairway down to the bottom level of the Mysterious Castle, and you will see the Master Sword highlighted by a ray of light in the middle of a pedestal surrounded by stained glass walls. Walk up to the Master Sword and watch the cinematic that plays out as Link pulls the sword from the stone and inherits this legendary blade.
As a result of removing the Master Sword, time will return to normal in what you realize to be Hyrule Castle, and all of Ganon’s forces will wake up. Make your way out of the castle, defeating enemies along the way with the Master Sword, and return to the King of Red Lions to make your way to the next stop in the story: the Forsaken Fortress.
