2025 is shaping up to be an exciting year for racing fans. Mario Kart World was released on June 5 as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2. However, Sega is looking to get in on the action with Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, the next installment in the Sonic Racing series. In addition to new features like the CrossWorlds mechanic that changes the course after the first lap, the developer has revealed that a huge lineup of characters will be available for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. While many of these racers come from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, some more unexpected names will make an appearance.

During the Summer Game Fest 2025 presentation, Sega unveiled a new look at Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. The trailer revealed new characters coming to the game from different IPs. Specifically, the game will include Hatsune Miku, Ichiban Kasuga, and Joker as free post-launch content. This means everyone will get to experience these well-known characters in the future. In addition, Sega announced that Steve, Alex, and Creeper are coming to the game as part of a collaboration with Minecraft. As seen in the video, this collaboration, which will be paid content, appears to include a track themed around Minecraft‘s massive world as well. In particular, the Overworld and Nether were shown off, along with minecarts as available vehicles.

Besides unveiling guest characters, Sega revealed a September 25 release date for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, meaning fans only have to wait a few more months. In addition, pre-orders for the game are available now, with those who do so gaining three days of early access. The end of the trailer also revealed a Werehog Pack inspired by 2008’s Sonic Unleashed for pre-ordering, along with a Sonic Prime character Pack for ordering the Digital Deluxe Edition.
It is also worth pointing out that other characters for the game have yet to be revealed. Besides Minecraft, five mystery character slots were shown at the end of the trailer for the Season Pass. It will be interesting to see what else the developer has in store for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds as it nears release later this summer. Time will tell how it will be able to compete against other competitors, such as Mario Kart World on the Switch 2.
