Man Arrested for Stealing $10,000 Worth of Nintendo Switch Games From Libraries

A man in Oakland was recently arrested for stealing $10,000 worth of Nintendo Switch games from local libraries. Now that the Nintendo Switch 2 is out in the wild, many gamers have found securing the new console in its early days easier said than done due to supplies running out almost as soon as retailers get their shipments. Sure enough, the Nintendo Switch 2 has quickly become Nintendo’s fastest-selling system, with over 3.5 million units sold globally in just its first week on the market alone.

With the Switch 2 and its many games and accessories in such high demand, desperate gamers have sometimes turned to shady means of getting their hands on the newest generation of Nintendo hardware. Just like they did with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, scalpers have been snatching up Switch 2 units and reselling them for inflated prices online. Additionally, a delivery truck had its Nintendo Switch 2 inventory stolen in a heist while transporting it to a GameStop in Texas earlier this month.

A man in Oakland was arrested on June 17 after being accused of stealing about $10,000 worth of Nintendo Switch games from local libraries in Marin County, California. According to Dexerto and the official Facebook page for the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, authorities believe the suspect specifically targeted the libraries for their Nintendo Switch game collections, as many now offer up a curated selection of video games to draw in younger visitors. Additionally, the robberies are said to have taken place across at least seven library locations between April and June.

Oakland Man Arrested In Switch Game Library Theft

The suspect in question is now facing 12 felony charges for his alleged Nintendo Switch game thefts, including multiple counts of burglary and committing a felony while out on bail. While the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 has made the affected libraries even more likely targets for such crimes, there is no word on whether any Switch 2 games were stolen. The exact titles and number of games stolen haven’t been made public, but the reported dollar value could mean that over 150 titles could have been taken.

On a lighter note, the Nintendo Switch 2 has been enjoying strong sales, with upcoming titles like Donkey Kong Bananza already topping charts at outlets like Amazon. The Nintendo Switch 2 itself recently surpassed the lifetime sales of the Xbox Series X, Series S, and the digital PS5 in Japan, which is a strong sign that Nintendo’s new hardware might be one of the most financially successful systems of all time.
