The latest PlayStation State of Play event did not feature one of Sony’s biggest upcoming PlayStation 5 games, which isn’t a good sign.

During the June 4 State of Play, the company revealed Project Defiant, “the first wireless fight stick” for PS5 and PC. The new controller was teased in a short video that showcased its retro design with subtle modern touches, resembling PlayStation’s current style. As described in a PlayStation blog post, the fight stick features “toolless interchangeable restrictor gates for the stick,” alongside various buttons with mechanical switches and a touchpad similar to the DualSense controller.

Project Defiant also features an ergonomic design, which Sony claims is perfect for intense fighting game sessions. While the controller is wireless, users who want zero latency while playing can use it through a wired connection on PS5 or PC—though it’s worth noting that Sony stated the latency in wireless mode is “ultra low” thanks to PS Link wireless technology. The arcade controller also comes with a carry case that includes a lever gap.

Sony has not provided a specific release date, only stating that Project Defiant will launch in 2026; however, the company promised to reveal more information about it in the coming months. While players already have an array of PS5 controllers to choose from—such as the DualSense, DualSense Edge, Razer Wolverine V2 Pro, and PDP Victrix Pro BFG—the new fight stick brings a uniquely retro touch to the PS5.
