Star Wars Battlefront 2’s Renewed Hype Deserves to Be More Than a Flash in a Pan

It’s been a couple of good years for the Star Wars video game franchise, with fans getting treated to great games like the Star Wars Jedi series and the latest Fortnite collaboration. However, the game that many fans seem to be booting up recently has been Star Wars Battlefront 2. According to Steam statistics, this 2017 title has seen a significant spike in players, which is a hot topic for discussion in r/StarWarsBattlefront and other gaming subreddits. There could be a few reasons as to why Star Wars Battlefront 2, an almost eight-year-old game, is seeing a resurgence, which should be a sign of better things for the series.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 received lukewarm reviews because of its unsatisfying single-player campaign and its initially egregious microtransactions related to upgrades for multiplayer. The game tweaked this system, making it more fair for lower spenders. However, Battlefront 2 saw another setback in the swarm of cheaters, making almost every match on PC a frustrating battle. Therefore, it’s a surprise that the game continues to survive and is seeing its player count rise significantly in 2025.

A Star Wars Battlefront 2 developer says the original team wants to return for a third game after fans flock back to the 2017 action shooter.

Why Star Wars Battlefront 2’s Sudden Spike in Popularity Should Lead to a Sequel

Battlefront 2 has a Huge Discount on Steam

An effective way to renew players’ interest in an old game like Star Wars Battlefront 2 is to provide a discount. The game started to slash its price around May, with players being able to get the game for US$7.99 from its original price of US$39.99. This coincides with the sudden spike in Battlefront 2‘s player count starting from that month. Its price dipped lower to just $3.99 around June 19, with the Special Promotion lasting until June 27th. The 90% discount during this month could also correspond to the game reaching its five-year peak player count.

Andor and Fortnite Could be Drumming up Hype for Battlefront 3

Muhannad Ben Amor, who plays Wilmon Paak in the critically acclaimed Star Wars show Andor, recently posted on his Instagram story that he has logged over 469 hours of Battlefront 2 on his PlayStation 5. He also stated that he’s been playing the game since release and that “Star Wars gotta give us Battlefront 3 ASAP.”

Apart from Amor’s rallying cry for a sequel, Fortnite could also be a factor in renewing interest in the Battlefront series. The recent and limited Galactic Battle Battle Royale event let players use iconic weapons like Captain Phasma’s F-11D Blaster, wield the power of a lightsaber and the Force by training with hologram Rey, and even ride an X-Wing or TIE fighter. Now that the event is over, the best game to provide a similar experience is Star Wars Battlefront 2.

The Rise in Battlefront 2’s Popularity is Proof of Interest for a Sequel

DICE has already ended support for Star Wars Battlefront 2, which means that fans shouldn’t expect any content updates from it. It could also be a sign that the studio isn’t interested in creating a sequel. However, the game is seeing a resurgence since more people have gotten to try it out during the past few months of Battlefront 2‘s Special Promotion on Steam.

Its player count is steadily hovering around the high 20,000s at the time of writing, so players are clearly enjoying it and riding its hype train. Meanwhile, developers and actors who worked on Battlefront 2 have also voiced support and encouragement in this hype amounting to something more. The ball is seemingly now in EA and DICE’s court, and it’ll be interesting to see how long Battlefront 2‘s renewed hype can be sustained.
