Z-A Mega Could Still Counter its Greatest Weakness

While the removal of abilities in Pokemon Legends: Z-A may hurt one Pokemon, a new Mega Evolution could still potentially retain its signature strength. Pokemon Legends: Z-A carrying over a lot of the quirks from its predecessor means that once again, it will require an approach that differs from the main series. That means that some Pokemon may have different roles to play, or their utility could change. In particular, the loss of abilities will have a major impact on at least one Pokemon. At the same time, the return of Mega Evolutions could come with its own benefits.

The return of Mega Evolution in Pokemon Legends: Z-A marks a prominent selling point for the game. The last couple of generations have not featured Mega Evolution at all, instead experimenting with other mechanics such as Z-Moves, Gigantamax Pokemon, and Terastallization. Mega Evolution allowed certain Pokemon to evolve into a more powerful form. This would come with improved stats, a new design, and occasionally new abilities or typings as well. Many Mega Evolutions took Pokemon‘s competitive scene by storm thanks to their sheer power and newfound perks. Their return in Pokemon Legends: Z-A could see many more Pokemon getting similar spikes in utility.

Eelektross May Need a Mega Evolution to Preserve a Key Strength

Eelektross is Normally the Only Pokemon With No Weaknesses

Eelektross is an anomaly when it comes to Pokemon‘s type weaknesses for one reason, as it is solely Electric-type, which has one weakness in the form of Ground. However, Eelektross’ only ability is Levitate, which makes it immune to Ground-type moves. This gives it the unique distinction of a Pokemon that has absolutely no weaknesses, and an immunity to a rather common type to boot. By no means does this make Eelektross invincible, as its bulk and defenses are fairly average. However, its lack of a weakness makes it difficult to take out before it lands a hit with its powerful offensive stats.

The Dark/Ghost Pokemon Sableye and Spiritomb also had no weaknesses before the Fairy type was introduced in Pokemon X and Y.

Losing its Ability Restores Eelektross’ Only Type Vulnerability

Unfortunately, Eelektross’ next appearance will feature a new problem because Pokemon Legends: Z-A won’t feature abilities. Admittedly, this won’t be a devastating change for Eelektross. After all, it will still be able to hit as hard as it usually does. However, regaining its weakness to Ground will make its low speed much more of a detriment, as Levitate protected it from what would have otherwise been its only type weakness. Losing Levitate gives it a glaring weakness that can be exploited in battle. This changes Eelektross from a treat that’s hard to take out to a slow-moving powerhouse with a serious weak point.

A Flying-Type Mega Evolution Would Retain Eelektross’ Ground-type Immunity

There is a way for Eelektross to make up for this loss. Eelektross is among Pokemon Legends: Arceus‘ rumored Mega Evolutions. A Mega Eelektross could restore its immunity to ground by becoming an Electric/Flying Pokemon, since Flying-types are naturally immune to Ground. However, this would come with a few caveats. First, it would introduce weaknesses to Ice and Rock, and remove Eelektross’ Electric resistance, possibly making it worse off defensively. In addition, it would likely need a new ability in future generations due to the Flying type making Levitate redundant. Still, it may be the only way to restore Eelektross’ Ground-type immunity in Pokemon Legends: Z-A.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A could feature a big shift for Eelektross. It could have a lot to gain from Pokemon Legends: Z-A‘s take on Mega Evolution, and part of that could involve regaining what it loses from the format. There are a lot of possibilities for what a Mega Eelektross can bring to the table, and a new typing is definitely on the table. Eelektross definitely won’t be bringing Levitate to Pokemon Legends: Z-A. The question is whether a Mega Evolution will give it another workaround, or something else as a trade-off.
