Magic: the Gathering‘s upcoming “Edge of Eternities” expansion will feature some of the game’s most powerful Lands returning to the Standard format, officially reprinting the shock lands. The wide release cycle for Magic: the Gathering has featured a plethora of powerful cards being introduced to the game, with many of its most beloved cards seeing multiple reprints. Wizards of the Coast often brings back older cards for a variety of purposes, both to make them playable in new formats and make expensive cards more accessible. Now, one particularly strong set of Lands is making a big comeback.
Lands serve as one of the most ubiquitous card types in Magic: the Gathering, with basically every deck in the game needing to run a plethora of Lands. Lands serve as the game’s main mana source and can range from “Basic Lands” tapping for one type of Mana to multiple different variants of multicolored lands. Many dual-color and tri-color Lands have often been seen as powerful Magic staple cards, allowing players to access multiple types of Mana early into a game. Wizards of the Coast is now gearing up to bring back a fan-favorite set of “Dual Lands.”

The return of shock lands will introduce a suite of powerful new options for a variety of different decks with their reprint in Edge of Eternities. Shock lands offer instant access to two different colors of Mana, only requiring the player to pay 2 Life for the Lands to enter untapped and available to use immediately. The reprints will serve as the first time in several years many of the shock lands have been playable in the game’s Standard format, with several last appearing in Standard with 2018’s “Guilds of Ravnica.”
Edge of Eternities re-adding shock lands to Standard format is set to join a major shift for Magic: the Gathering‘s main competitive format. Edge of Eternities’ release on August 1 will welcome the next “rotation” of the Standard format, with cards from “March of the Machine” and earlier being removed from the format. The rotation will notably remove the “pain lands” from the format, requiring players to pay 1 Life to tap them for one of two different colors. Edge of Eternities looks to be bringing some big changes to Magic: the Gathering with its August release.
