Like any good kart racer, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is promising a large list of playable characters, with more to be added through post-launch DLC. The Sonic the Hedgehog universe is already filled with popular mascots, and past Sonic racing games like Sonic & Sega: All-Stars Racing have even included characters from other video games like Shenmue and Team Fortress. Fans have already been putting together wish lists of non-Sonic characters they want to see in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, but it looks like Sega could be taking a more unexpected approach to guest DLC racers.

The Sooner Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Confirms One Feature, the Better

With what’s known about Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds so far, one player-requested feature would be a great addition worth announcing if it’s in the game.

F2Insider recently started sharing leaked clips of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds on Twitter (via NintendoLife), seemingly confirming that SpongeBob SquarePants will be a future DLC character. The lovable yellow sea sponge is shown riding a SpongeBob-themed Extreme Gear hoverboard through a special course set in Bikini Bottom. Other clips show SpongeBob driving a Krabby Patty-themed car and Sonic using a power-up inspired by SpongeBob’s alarm, and rumor has it that Patrick Star could be joining the Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds roster as well.

SpongeBob SquarePants might not be the only Nickelodeon property being represented in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds either. Another leak features concept images of the Party Wagon of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fame as a vehicle option, as well as an Extreme Gear patterned after Avatar: The Last Airbender – complete with Aang as its rider. There might also be a track inspired by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, featuring a run through New York City’s sewers and a giant mutant enemy blocking the path. Lastly, it looks like Alex from Minecraft could be another DLC character with her own blocky stone kart.

Both SpongeBob SquarePants and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are owned by Paramount, the company that produces the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movies. As such, it seems that this leaked Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds DLC could be the result of some sort of cross-promotional deal between Sega and Paramount – assuming that the leaked material is authentic. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds doesn’t have an exact release date yet, but this could change at Summer Game Fest later this week.
