One of the most exciting reveals to come out of Summer Game Fest 2025 was confirmation of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles as a remaster of the classic Square Enix strategy RPG. A remake or remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics had been long-rumored, with notable leakers supporting its existence going into the Summer Game Fest showcase. However, another Final Fantasy title that was leaked alongside Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles has yet to rear its head, making it feel like only a matter of time before it makes its presence known.
Although the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project has been an ambitious attempt at reviving one of the franchises most beloved titles, it seems Square Enix is also starting to dip its toes into smaller-scale revivals of its classic Final Fantasy games, such is the case with releases like the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection and now Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles. However, another rumored game is said to strike a balance between these two remake approaches, and now that FFT is confirmed for the remaster treatment, it seems more likely than ever that a Final Fantasy 9 remake is on the way.

Final Fantasy 9 Remake Was Leaked Alongside Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles
One of the largest leaks in recent gaming history came in 2021 when data on the backend of Nvidia’s GeForce Now was exposed, revealing entries within the service’s database for an array of unreleased and unannounced (at the time) games. The leak listed games from several major publishers, including titles from Sony, Microsoft, Capcom, EA, and more. While a large portion of these games came to fruition over the coming years, others were canceled, and there are still a few holdouts yet to be seen. But one leaked title from Square Enix that has not even been announced.
Square Enix Games Revealed in the 2021 Nvidia GeForce Now Leak
- Chrono Cross Remaster (Became Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition)
- Final Fantasy 7 Remake (PC)
- Final Fantasy 9 Remake
- Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster (Became Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles)
- Kingdom Hearts 4
- New strategy game (Became The DioField Chronicle)
- Tactics Ogre Remaster
- Unannounced card game 2 (Became Voice of the Cards: The Forsaken Maiden)
With the games from this lineup having a pretty solid track record of being released, or at least officially announced, the listed Final Fantasy 9 remake remains the biggest question mark left from this four-year-old leak. With the confirmation that Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is indeed real and a remaster of the original PS1 title, it seems more likely than ever that a Final Fantasy 9 remake is in development as well. The question remains as to when and where this remake will be officially revealed after the major summer showcases have come and gone.
A Final Fantasy 9 Remake Reveal is Not Off the Table for 2025
Despite the Final Fantasy 9 remake not making an appearance at the major 2025 summer showcases, Final Fantasy fans were still treated to the confirmation of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles and its release date of September 30 of this same year. But with these showcases marking one of the few yearly opportunities for major game announcements, the windows for an FF9 remake announcement are closing quickly. The next best opportunity for the game to make an appearance is at Gamescom later this summer, but the Tokyo Game Show in September might be more likely.
However, Square Enix may want to wait until after Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is released before switching gears to a Final Fantasy 9 remake, meaning that The Game Awards in December could be the stage where it is finally revealed. The game has likely been in development for quite some time if it has existed in some form since the 2021 Nvidia leak. As such, it’s likely fans will get official confirmation of this FF9 remake sometime in the not-too-distant future.
