During your runs in Elden Ring Nightreign, you may come across the remains of fallen players from other worlds. These remains drop whatever items that player had on death, but what you’ll notice is that they also have a Grief stat attached to them. This extra stat may seem insignificant, but in the right conditions, it may just end up being the key to victory.
Grief stats are more powerful than they seem. However, they can either be extremely valuable or practically useless, depending on a number of factors. This guide explores the benefits of these passive Grief stats, the situations where you’ll want to have them, and how to view the Grief stats provided by each Nightfarer in Nightreign.

Best Wylder Build in Elden Ring Nightreign
Here are all the best weapons, passives, and relics you should look out for when playing as Wylder in Elden Ring Nightreign.
What Are Grief Stats?
A Grief stat is a weapon passive that gives you bonus stats (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, etc). Gear with Grief stats only appear on weapons looted from red phantom corpses found randomly during a match. These red phantoms represent the corpses of players who have died in a different match, and when you loot them, they’ll drop whatever weapons they were carrying. Those weapons will have a Grief passive that gives extra stats based on what character that player was using at the time.
For example, if you come across the red phantom/corpse of a player who was playing as the Duchess, you’ll get weapons with the Duchess’ Grief. By simply having that weapon with Duchess’ Grief in one of your weapon slots, you’ll gain bonus Dexterity and Intelligence.
If you want to find a red phantom corpse, check the area near a Day boss’ spawn point.
Character-Specific Grief Bonuses
Grief passives increase two of your character’s stats based on the two highest stats of the person you looted that Grief item from. You can see exactly what stats they provide to you by opening the Status screen and pressing R3.
You can also view the stats of each Nightfarer by visiting the Characters tab of the Visual Codex. This should give you a general idea of what to expect when you pick up a Grief item.
Should You Use Grief Passives?
Absolutely. However, you should keep the stat bonuses in mind when picking up an item with a Grief bonus. For example, if you’re playing Recluse, it might not be worth picking up an item with Raider’s Grief, as that would give you stats that aren’t as good on your character.
The best kind of Grief item you can get is one that matches your own character. Both stat bonuses provided by that item will perfectly match yours, and there’s a very high likelihood that the item itself will be good for you as well.
