Summary

  • An English Mega Evolution set for Pokemon TCG will be released on September 26, with pre-releases from September14-21.
  • Pokemon TCG is facing product shortages, and organizers warned about limited pre-release kits for the new set.

The Pokemon Company is planning to release the first English Mega Evolution set for the Pokemon Trading Card Game on September 26, with pre-releases running from September 14 to September 21. Mega Evolutions were first introduced in the series’ sixth generation and quickly became a fan-favorite transformation mechanic. With Mega Evolutions making a comeback in the upcoming game Pokemon Legends: Z-A for Nintendo Switch consoles, it’s only fitting that Pokemon TCG follows suit with a new expansion.

The Pokemon Company previously announced in February the return of Mega Evolutions in the Pokemon TCG, promising the first new Mega Evolution cards nearly a decade after the mechanic made its debut. The announcement provided sneak peeks at two of the new cards collectors could get their hands on with the new set, Mega Lucario ex and Mega Gardevoir ex. Despite the transformation’s popularity with players, Mega Evolutions were phased out to make way for GX Pokemon in the Sun and Moon era. With this new expansion, Mega Evolutions are making yet another comeback just in time for the release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A in October.

The secret rare cards from the upcoming Pokemon TCG set have been revealed, showcasing impressive artwork that fans will soon be able to collect.

An English Mega Evolution expansion is scheduled to release on September 26, according to a leak reported by Pokemon TCG fansite PokeBeach. Pre-releases will run from September 13 to September 21. Although currently unnamed, the cards will be based on Japan’s Mega Brave and Mega Symphonia sets, which are due to arrive on August 1. Marking a departure from the Scarlet & Violet series of Pokemon TCG cards, the Mega Brave and Mega Symphonia sets will run under the series name Pokemon Card Game MEGA.

Mega Evolutions Are Returning to Pokemon TCG

According to PokeBeach, The Pokemon Company has warned tournament organizers that quantities of the new set’s pre-release kit will likely be affected by ongoing product shortages, resulting in fewer kits being available than usual. The warning comes just a few months after The Pokemon Company revealed its plans to increase production of future Pokemon TCG releases after players had their pre-orders of Destined Rivals canceled due to high demand. Despite the word of caution, organizers were told that future events may not be affected by similar shortages.

It’s no surprise that The Pokemon Company is preparing tournament organizers for shortages prior to the new expansion’s release, especially considering the rapid explosion in popularity the Pokemon TCG has enjoyed in the past few years. Surging demand has caused the prices of sets, boosters, and individual cards to skyrocket, with some fans pulling Pokemon TCG cards worth hundreds of dollars from single packs. Although pre-release kits will likely be scarce, hopefully, the Mega Evolution expansion’s full release will see enough cards printed for everyone to enjoy at a reasonable price.
