Rumored God of War Game May Feature a Different Protagonist

Summary

  • The rumored God of War game may feature Deimos as the main playable character, a significant shift for the franchise.
  • It is rumored to be a 2.5D Metroidvania title set within Greek mythology, potentially being announced soon.
  • The God of War franchise may be celebrating its 20th anniversary with a new game release, addressing fan dissatisfaction.

The rumored upcoming God of War game will reportedly feature Deimos, Kratos’s brother, as the main playable character. This would mark a significant change for the God of War franchise, which has featured Kratos as the protagonist in all the entries released so far.

For a very long time, God of War has been synonymous with the PlayStation brand, thanks to several successful games in the series being exclusive to Sony’s platform. Since being re-imagined with the 2018 namesake release and its sequel, the IP has become notably more popular overall and attracted new audiences on the PC as well. As a result, fans have been very curious to know about Santa Monica Studio’s plans for the franchise’s future, even more so after rumors of a switch to Egyptian mythology started intensifying. Most recently, a new report claimed that the next God of War could be a 2.5D Metroidvania title, unlike the previous two games.

If God of War’s next outing is a prequel set in Egypt, previous companions may not be present, but Kratos could still have some company.

As spotted by Insider Gaming, Twitter user MysticMsa3d shared a conversation with leaker Shpeshal_Nick where it was revealed that a new God of War game in which the player takes control of Deimos was currently in development. It was suggested that this Greek mythology-inspired title could be announced in 2025, with the upcoming PlayStation State of Play on June 4 increasingly looking like a suitable occasion. Similar to Tom Henderson and Jeff Grubb, the leaker also confirmed that the game in question fell in the Metroidvania genre. Moreover, the report also highlighted a ResetEra thread that supported the claims of a Greece setting and Deimos being the central character. Additionally, certain comments also stated that the project was “heavily inspired” by the 2019 Metroidvania game, Blasphemous, and that Mega Cat Studios, the developer behind Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit, was “involved,” with Santa Monica Studio looking over things.

New God of War to Feature Deimos in a 2.5D Metroidvania Game

If the reports of God of War dipping its toes in the metroidvania genre are true, it wouldn’t be the first time a popular franchise has tried its hand at this category. Last year, Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia also tried something similar with the release of The Lost Crown and received widespread critical acclaim. What might be a bigger challenge for the rumored God of War game is getting strong scores while also selling well, something that Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown was unable to do.

With 2025 being the 20th anniversary year of the God of War franchise, it might appear to be the perfect window to announce a new game in the series. In case a move in that regard happens, it could even address the dissatisfaction a section of God of War fans felt around the time of the official anniversary festivities back in March.
