The brand-new Game of Thrones video game, Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, has been revealed at Summer Game Fest 2025. While many agree that it fumbled its final season, Game of Thrones is still one of the most popular fantasy franchises in the world. There have been a handful of Game of Thrones video games released over the years, with the newly-revealed Game of Thrones: War for Westeros coming in 2026.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros was revealed at Summer Game Fest with a cinematic trailer that showed a battle between The Night King and Jon Snow. At the end of the trailer, The Night King defeats Snow and resurrects him as a zombie. Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is developed and published by PlaySide Studios and will be released at some point in 2026. The cinematic trailer set an exciting tone for the game, but there are a couple of caveats that may make the game somewhat less interesting for some fans.

For one, Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is a real-time strategy game. It’s not an open-world action-RPG like many fans have been hoping to see. While that’s great news for fans of the strategy genre, it means those that aren’t interested in that niche may not be as excited about War for Westeros. The other catch is that the game is, so far, only confirmed for PC. The latest Game of Thrones game skipped consoles as well, so it’s unfortunate that War for Westeros appears to be following in its footsteps, even if the real-time strategy genre is much better suited for PC than it is consoles.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros Trailer
When Game of Thrones: War for Westeros releases in 2026, players will have the chance to take control of one of the Great Houses or the Night King, with the ultimate goal of conquering the Seven Kingdoms. Game of Thrones‘ Great Houses and iconic characters will be represented in the single-player experience, but there will also be free-for-all PvP multiplayer available as well.
So far, we know that Game of Thrones: War for Westeros will feature House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, and the Night King. Players will be able to forge “strategic alliances” with the other houses and apply various strategies to gain control of Westeros. Units will include infantry, cavalry, siege engines, giants, and dragons, in typical Game of Thrones fashion. Players can expect to visit memorable locations like The Wall, King’s Landing, and more. While the real-time strategy genre is relatively niche, it does seem like a perfect fit for the Game of Thrones universe, and so hopefully War for Westeros fares better than some other recent GoT projects.
