PEAK is all about climbing to the top of various biomes (either solo or with three buddies), and there’s a lot of stuff on the island that the game doesn’t teach you about, like what the fog does, for example.
You’ll have to deal with a lot of status ailments on your trek, and making sure your character is fed and fit will be crucial to the climb. However, if you dilly-dally and take your sweet time getting to the peak, there’s a nasty fog that’ll come for your squad. Here’s how it works in PEAK.

PEAK: The Fog Rises… Explained
Watch Out
After you start your climb in PEAK and spend about 5-6 minutes, you’ll see the message appear on-screen telling you that “The Fog Rises.” This is basically just a slow-moving cloud that will start on the island and cause an ice debuff if you stand in it. Luckily, it adds the cold ailment very slowly, so you can easily get away from the fog if you’re quick.
We timed it on the Shore, the opening level of PEAK, and the fog didn’t actually start rolling in until about 15 minutes. So, unless you really like to take your time on the main shore looking for luggage, you really don’t have to worry too much about the rising fog.
If you don’t want to deal with the fog in PEAK at all, you can always choose the easier difficulty mode at the airport. You’ll take less fall damage and take longer to get hungry, too—a good choice if you don’t want the game to be too hard.
What Can You Do to Survive the Fog in PEAK?
If you manage to get stuck in the fog by yourself, there are a couple of things you can use to stay alive. Since the mist only causes cold damage and nothing else, you can stand near a warm object to stay alive.
For example, if you’re on the Shore, you can go back to the plane crash site and stand near the flames of one of the wings. Or, you can find a Lantern and use its light to keep you warm-this is limited, though.
