Final Fantasy Tactics Collector’s Box Makes the Game a Separate Purchase

Square Enix is celebrating the release of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles with a special Collector’s Box, but it doesn’t include the game itself. Collector’s editions often stir up arguments about whether they’re worth their price tag, and plenty of releases have drawn ire from fans for things like not including a physical game disc. The Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Collector’s Box goes a step further, though, as it doesn’t have a copy of the game at all.

Fans were treated to the reveal that Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles would get two versions during PlayStation’s June 4 State of Play. These include the Classic edition, which uses the original’s graphics and gameplay with a few modernizations, and the Enhanced version, which offers remastered visuals, fully-voiced dialogue, and other improvements. Both versions are included with any copy of the game, but those buying the Collector’s Box will have to get their copies separately to enjoy either experience.

The Collector’s Box didn’t make an appearance during the State of Play, but it popped up on the official Square Enix store after the game’s initial announcement. The $200 pre-order comes with several goodies not available in regular editions, including a Ramza Beoulve figurine, multiple art cards, and three Chocobo plushes. Noticeably missing, though, is the actual game. The product description confirms that the box doesn’t include The Ivalice Chronicles, requiring another $50 purchase for fans who want both the collectibles and the game. It’s not the first collector’s edition to have what feels like a major oversight, as fans spoke out against the Avowed Physical SteelBook edition having no physical game copy in November, but leaving out the game entirely is a somewhat confusing choice.

Square Enix also listed a bundle including the Collector’s Box and a physical package of the game for those who want both, but it’s no longer available. That’s likely because the Collector’s Box itself has already sold out, even with the game being sold separately. Whether Square Enix will re-release the package in the future is uncertain, but fans of the franchise still have Final Fantasy‘s presence at the Summer Game Fest on June 6 to look forward to. Those who only want the game can also still pre-order The Ivalice Chronicles in both digital and physical formats.

The State of Play teased other limited-edition goodies, too. The Astro Bot DualSense controller is making a return later in 2025, so collectors should keep their eyes out for more news on when it will release or become available for pre-order.
