Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida and creative director Kazutoyo Maehiro hinted that the gritty action title could head to Nintendo Switch 2 if the team can manage it. Yoshida said that, since Final Fantasy 16 is available on PlayStation 5, PC, and now Xbox Series X/S, all that is left for the development team to potentially work with is Nintendo’s latest console.
Following its initial 2023 launch on the PS5, Final Fantasy 16 made its way to PC via Steam and Epic Games Store in 2024. Nearly two years after its release, Final Fantasy 16 had a surprising shadow drop launch on Xbox consoles following the June 8 Xbox Games Showcase. Although Final Fantasy 16 initially struggled to gain a foothold on Xbox consoles, the action-focused RPG eventually climbed its way up Xbox’s Top Paid Games Chart in the US to claim the 11th highest spot. Final Fantasy 16 was also added to Xbox’s Stream Your Own Game program for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers to utilize on any supported device.

While Final Fantasy 16 is available on various platforms, Square Enix left the door open for another port. In the closing segment of Final Fantasy 14‘s Letter From the Producer LIVE Part 87 broadcast, Yoshida introduced Maehiro to promote Final Fantasy 16′s Xbox launch. Final Fantasy 16 Developers Hint at Potential Switch 2 Port
Maehiro echoed Yoshida’s statement and said that he wanted to “conquer it” when it came to developing games on Nintendo’s new system. Currently, the Switch 2 can utilize backward compatibility to play Final Fantasy entries released for the original Switch console, including the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection and Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age.
Although third-party launch window titles for the Switch 2 have struggled compared to first-party games like Mario Kart World, the exception has been Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition. CD Projekt Red’s open-world RPG has become the third-best-selling launch title on the Switch 2 as of this writing. Given that Cyberpunk 2077 and Final Fantasy 16 are both graphically demanding titles, it stands to reason that the latter could potentially run on the Switch 2 after some optimizations.
As it stands, Creative Studio 3’s next single-player project is the highly anticipated Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, which will receive a Switch 2 version alongside other platforms. Though all rumors must be taken with a grain of salt, only time will tell if Final Fantasy 16 will receive a Switch 2 port.
