Star Wars Battlefront 2 Sets Another Impressive Record

Star Wars Battlefront 2 has broken its player count record on Steam for the second time in a month. After peaking at 10,489 concurrent players back in 2021, Star Wars Battlefront 2 reached a new all-time peak on the platform last month, reaching 18,634 simultaneous players. Now, however, as players continue to campaign for publisher EA to green light a third entry in the series, Battlefront 2 has once again smashed through its previous record on Steam.

The sudden Star Wars Battlefront 2 player resurgence kicked off shortly after the finale of Andor Season 2 premiered in early May, conveniently around the same time as May the Fourth, a popular Star Wars holiday. And although there are a ton of different Star Wars video games to choose from, fans decided that they were going to petition for EA to green-light a third entry in the Battlefront series. So far, their efforts have been in vain, but over a month has gone by, and players aren’t backing down quietly.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 Sets Another Player Count Record

Despite the fact that EA ended support for Star Wars Battlefront 2 in 2020, it continues to set new player count records on Steam after all these years. Fans were able to set an impressive record of 18,634 concurrent players back in May, but the community has once again smashed through that record. According to SteamDB, which tracks everything related to Steam’s backend, Star Wars Battlefront 2 achieved a total of 20,311 concurrent players on the platform on June 20 (or June 21, depending on the timezone). While this can largely be attributed to the community’s ongoing efforts to get EA to give them Battlefront 3, another contributing factor will be the 90% discount that is currently available, putting the game down to just $3.99 USD until June 26.

Unfortunately, even if players continue to break the game’s concurrent player count record, Star Wars Battlefront 3 is unlikely to happen. Last month, EA shocked fans when it was revealed that it had canceled its upcoming Black Panther game. According to the publisher, it plans to focus on a small handful of franchises, which include Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, and Apex Legends. While EA still intends to fund Motive’s new Iron Man game and a third Star Wars: Jedi game from Respawn Entertainment, the Battlefront series was nowhere to be seen. Plans could always change in the future, but for the time being, it looks like EA has no intention of giving Battlefront fans what they want.

EA might be against green-lighting a third Battlefront game, but its former developers aren’t. Shortly after Battlefront 2 spiked in players last month, Mats Helge Holm, a developer on 2015’s Star Wars Battlefront and its 2017 sequel, made a comment on Reddit and said he and his ex-colleagues “want to get the gang back together” for Star Wars Battlefront 3. Sadly, this decision lies in the hands of EA as the IP owners.
