Magic: the Gathering has officially given fans a first look at one of the new cards set to come as part of the game’s Avatar the Last Airbender crossover. 2025 has been a busy year for the Wizards of the Coast-developed card game, with plenty of exciting new expansions releasing throughout the year. Fans returned to the Tarkir plane for the first time in a decade with “Tarkir Dragonstorm,” while the “Aetherdrift” set saw many of Magic the Gathering‘s characters thrown into a high-stakes inter-planar race. However, one notable change in 2025 has been one of Magic‘s biggest yet.
2025 has seen Wizards of the Coast go all in on its “Universes Beyond” sets, with several exciting crossovers releasing throughout the year. June saw the debut of the first Standard-legal Universes Beyond expansion, with the release of the highly-anticipated Final Fantasy-themed set seeing massive success. Wizards of the Coast has already revealed plenty more Universes Beyond crossovers coming in the future as well, with a Spider-Man expansion later this summer and Avatar the Last Airbender in the Fall. Magic: the Gathering‘s new Aang card comes with several implications for the launch of the Avatar the Last Airbender set. The card hints at the previously-mentioned “bending” mechanics, with “waterbending,” “airbending,” “earthbending,” and “firebending” all being added as different mechanics flavored around the Nickelodeon series. The Aang card also features all five colors in its text box, potentially making it an enticing new option for players looking to play five-color Commander or Brawl decks.
The new Avatar card was far from the only major reveal Wizards of the Coast debuted during MagicCon Las Vegas 2025. The card game juggernaut teased some of the first in-universe expansions for 2026, with the game returning to the fan-favorite Lorwyn and Strixhaven planes. Wizards of the Coast also revealed the pair of pre-built Commander Decks coming with August’s “Edge of Eternities,” introducing “World Shaper” as a sacrifice-focused deck and “Counter Intelligence” focusing around putting counters on creatures and players. Magic: the Gathering fans should have lots of exciting new cards to look forward to in the coming months.
