Fortnite’s Superman Skin Is the Perfect Blend of Old and New

Fortnite’s current season has been a delight for DC fans. Battle Pass owners get immediate access to Robin as a playable skin, and the Battle Royale game mode will also include DC-themed Mythic weapons and Sprites to assist players in achieving a Victory Royale. To continue this excitement, Fortnite is also adding Superman to the Battle Pass later in the season, giving players an incentive to return to the game once he arrives.

The Superman skin could be a highlight for fans of the character, especially those looking forward to the release of the new movie later this year. Fortnite’s Super season is acting as a great build-up for the Superman movie, but there is another addition to this season that seems as though it could be more appealing to fans who have been following the character for a long time.

A prominent Fortnite leaker surprises players by announcing that one DC character might come to the battle royale as part of a new line of cosmetics.

The New Superman Skin References Two Eras of the Hero

An Outfit Perfect for All Fans

The initial reveal of Fortnite’s Superman skin was a welcome surprise. The character has not been seen in the game since Chapter 2: Season 7 Battle Pass Bonus Reward, so the fact that he has returned at all is great for fans of the character who missed out prior. Unlike the original design of his first Fortnite skin, this new iteration of Superman resembles his design from the upcoming movie, complete with the likeness of David Corenswet. The release of this skin coincides with the 2025 movie, but eager players who want access to the Superman skin early can buy the Battle Pass Bundle, immediately unlocking the character alongside 25 other Battle Pass rewards.

As with all previous Bonus Reward skins on the Battle Pass, Superman also has a second style available. This remained a mystery for some time, leaving room for speculation about whether this could be a Clark Kent style like the original Superman skin, or possibly another suit from the movie. To the surprise of many, though, the alternate look was revealed as the Superman Pen & Ink style, a comic-inspired appearance seemingly unrelated to the movie. This makes the skin ideal for fans both new and old, as they can choose between the most modern incarnation as well as a classic Superman design.

All players – including those with the Battle Pass Bundle – will need to wait until July 11 before they can unlock all the Superman cosmetics, including the Pen & Ink style. The Superman Quests will become available on this date to all Battle Pass owners, and the Superman rewards are gradually unlocked as each quest is completed.

Origins of the Superman Pen and Ink Suit

Superman’s new style may be unfamiliar to some players, as it is rooted in the Golden Age of the comics. The logo on the Pen & Ink skin has the familiar red “S” shared by most iterations, but the black emblem with the yellow border isn’t common for most modern versions of the suit. The specific version used in the Pen & Ink style is often referred to as the Fleischer Superman symbol, as it first appeared in Fleischer Studios’ Superman animated shorts from the 1940s.

Even if some fans don’t know of its design, it still influences current versions of the Superman suit, particularly in that it was the first to consistently maintain the pentagonal shape. Its legacy also lives on in its infrequent reappearances, as it featured in 2004’s DC: The New Frontier comic and was worn more recently in the Arrowverse TV universe.

The Pen & Ink style for Superman isn’t the only item coming to Fortnite using this design either, as the suit will be featured on some new loading screens, including one which features art by comic book artist Jim Lee, who co-designed the Pen & Ink suit with James Gunn for Fortnite and has been a major influence on modern versions of the character.

Although this style is definitely made with long-time fans in mind, its inclusion isn’t completely unrelated to the new movie. While the suit itself is unlike the one worn by Corenswet, some aspects of its design influenced the James Gunn movie’s version, and it’s likely that some Golden Age Superman stories will have served as inspiration for the plot. Both of the varying styles of the Superman skin are great for all fans, but the connection between the two is not unfounded, signifying two eras of the Man of Steel coming together.

Fortnite’s Super Battle Pass Skins Make an Iconic DC Character the Odd One Out

Fortnite’s Chapter 6: Season 3 Battle Pass has added a DC character fans have been waiting for, but there is still one skin missing from a full set.

The Superman Pen and Ink Fortnite Skin Could Mean More DC Collabs

The Superman skin is also a first for Fortnite. Though the comic book-style outfits were first introduced with the Deadpool and Wolverine Pen & Ink skins in 2024, Superman is the first DC character to receive this treatment. This could have opened the gateway for more Pen & Ink skins to appear in the shop based on other DC properties.

The most likely candidate for a skin of this type would be Batman. Not only is he just as prominent a DC figure as Superman, but his history dates almost as far back. His appearance could reflect Batman’s iconic original suit from Detective Comics #27. Another option would be to continue the collaboration with Jim Lee by using his timeless Batman suit design.

Though nothing has been announced about another DC Pen & Ink-styled skin yet, it would not be unexpected for Batman to receive one soon. Whenever there is a third-party collaboration on the Fortnite Battle Pass, there is often an Item Shop skin to accompany it later in the season. A Batman Pen & Ink skin would pair well with Superman, making it a great addition for Duos hoping to match skins. With Robin on the pass, he would also be a great fit to join this skin, too. If this skin doesn’t arrive soon, there could be another chance for it to appear on Batman Day later this year.

The new Superman skin in Fortnite is perfect for celebrating the character’s history without ignoring the future of the franchise. It acknowledges the modern era of The Last Son of Krypton and the fans hyped for the movie, while also calling back to the character’s roots. Whether they already have access to the base skin thanks to the Battle Pass Bundle or are patiently waiting for July 11 to arrive, Fortnite players have a lot of DC Battle Pass rewards to unlock and keep them occupied before the Superman set of cosmetics becomes available.
