The release window for a Sonic Frontiers sequel may have just been leaked online. 2022’s Sonic Frontiers stood out from most of the Blue Blur’s other platforming adventures thanks to a new open-world framework, expanded combat, and a more emotionally-driven story penned by longtime Sonic comic book scribe Ian Flynn. The results were mostly well-received by fans, with Sonic Frontiers even setting a record as the Sonic game with the most concurrent players on Steam at one point.

Almost a year after its initial release, Sonic Frontiers received a DLC expansion titled The Final Horizon, which added Tails, Knuckles, and Amy as playable characters alongside a special boss gauntlet and revised ending. References to Sonic Frontiers have appeared in games released since its initial debut, with Chaos Island being featured as a new level in Sonic X Shadow Generations. Saga, Dr. Eggman’s AI daughter who first appeared in Sonic Frontiers, will also be included as a playable character in the upcoming Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.

Meanwhile, fans have been waiting for a follow-up to Sonic Frontiers, and a Twitter user by the handle of p0wyful recently shared some alleged details about it (as reported by Comicbook). This Sonic Frontiers sequel will supposedly launch sometime in November 2026 and will retain the “open-zone” gameplay of its predecessor. The user also thinks that Ian Flynn will return to write the story, just like he did for Sonic Dream Team and Shadow Generations.

Rumored Sonic Frontiers 2 Launch Window

This is all just rumor and speculation for now, as there hasn’t been any official confirmation that a Sonic Frontiers sequel is even in development yet. However, the supposed November 2026 release window does line up with the pattern of previous Sonic the Hedgehog releases over the past few years. Sonic X Shadow Generations launched around that time last year, and the 2D platformer Sonic Superstars was released nearly a year before that. As for 2025, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is set to launch sometime later in 2025.

Sonic Frontiers was a success for Sega, with director Morio Kishimoto even saying that Sonic Team plans on refining the open-world gameplay that was introduced in that title for future installments. Sure enough, the Shadow Generations portion of Sonic X Shadow Generations included a smaller version of the “open-zone” as a hub between levels, and this might have been meant as a sample of what Sega has in store for the rumored Sonic Frontiers sequel.
