Sega is launching a new Sonic the Hedgehog mobile card game in the form of Sonic Blitz, something that hasn’t really been done before in the history of the Blue Blur. The past few years have been quite fruitful for Sonic the Hedgehog fans, with the live-action films being a smash success and many new video games being released across different genres and platforms. Last year saw Sonic X Shadow Generations update a classic title with new story content, while Sonic Racing: CrossWorld is set to deliver high-speed thrills as one of many kart racers coming out in 2025.

Sonic Rumble, the online battle royale platformer being developed by Rovio Entertainment, was originally supposed to launch in full on May 8. However, Sonic Rumble would ultimately be delayed again to allow the developers more time to incorporate the new features they would have added in the game’s most recent update. Rovio is primarily known for the Angry Birds franchise, and Sonic Rumble was to be its first game released after being bought by Sega in 2023. However, it turns out that Rovio had another Sonic mobile spin-off in the works.

A new piece of artwork could be hinting at a long-awaited remake of a Sonic game, but Sega might have missed its opportunity.

Sonic Blitz is a turn-based card game that recently launched in a limited capacity in the Philippines. Other regions can’t play it yet, but pages for it are available to view on Apple’s App Store and Google Play, as reported by Siliconera. In Sonic Blitz, players build decks of cards featuring the many different characters of the Sonic universe, each one with their own health numbers, attack power, and special abilities. Players place their cards in one of two lanes on the game board, with up to four cards being allowed in each lane. The objective is to deplete the opponent’s health.

Sonic Blitz won’t be completely devoid of the speed that players associate with the franchise, as each player can perform a “dash” to inflict extra damage at the end of their turn. As shown in some early gameplay footage from YouTube user MDGamestation, the characters featured in Sonic Blitz so far run the gamut from the expected headliners like Sonic and Amy to lesser-known figures like Marine the Raccoon.

As noted before, Sonic Blitz is only available in the Philippines at this time, and there is no word on a larger release date. A turn-based card game might be unorthodox for an adrenaline-fueled platforming franchise like Sonic the Hedgehog, but Sonic Blitz certainly looks interesting and could be just the thing to hold gamers over until the Blue Blur’s next mainline adventure.
