Take-Two Brings Back Delisted Game With Great Reviews

Summary

  • Rollerdrome, a well-reviewed game, has been relaunched on digital platforms after being delisted.
  • Fans are disappointed by the closure of Roll7 despite the game’s success.
  • The re-release highlights ongoing issues in the game industry, such as studio closures and layoffs, sparking frustration among gamers and developers.

The formerly delisted game Rollerdrome is making a comeback, and gamers can pick it up now. Rollerdrome originally launched in 2022, though the concept for it began back in 2017. The game is an interesting mash-up between skating games and shooters, tasking players with performing tricks while also engaging in gunplay.

Unfortunately, despite having largely positive reviews and even winning a game award, Rollerdrome was delisted from all digital platforms in February. It seemingly wasn’t due to a lack of success, as the game had moved a million copies by March 2024. Instead, it had to do with the shuttering of the development studio behind it, Roll7, and the sale of its original publisher.

EA, Take-Two, and CDPR Worried About Using AI Due to Backlash

Some of the biggest names in the gaming industry have concerns about the now-widespread dislike that many players feel toward generative AI.

Now, as promised by 2K, players will be able to purchase Rollerdrome once more. The game has re-appeared on all of its prior digital distribution platforms, including Xbox, PlayStation, and PC via Steam. Unfortunately, the game isn’t an Xbox Game Pass title as it had been in the past, but it’s possible that could change at some point. In the meantime, the game is currently available for $29.99 on all the aforementioned platforms. A PlayStation Plus Premium Game Trial is also available, albeit for a reduced 35 minutes instead of the usual hour.

Rollerdrome’s Relisting Excites and Disappoints Gamers

Given that many fans enjoyed this game, one might expect that they’d be happy to see it return to digital storefronts. The alternative, after all, is the game potentially dying in obscurity from being delisted. However, fans are angry that developer Roll7 was shut down despite the game’s success. Some of these fans have gone so far as to leave Steam reviews telling others to not buy Rollerdrome, and instead pirate it. This echoes something a former developer suggested that gamers do, stating that none of the people who brought it to life were working for the company anymore.

With this re-release, many who missed out on Rollerdrome will get an opportunity to try it for the first time. However, it also underscores an ongoing problem with the gaming industry, as many developer studios have been shuttered whether or not their games were successful. The number of gaming layoffs have been brutal in recent years, so it’s understandable why fans of the title and Roll7’s prior game OlliOlli World are angry about what happened. While it’s a good thing that the game has been preserved and will be playable for newcomers, many gamers and developers are fed up with the way the game industry has been going in general.
