GameStop has announced that it will offer customers 20% more trade-in value on the Switch 1 just by showing a Nintendo Switch 2 purchase receipt, regardless of which retailer Nintendo’s new console was bought from. The GameStop trade-in offer for showing a Switch 2 receipt is valid for both regular customers and GameStop Pro members.
The GameStop offer came just a day after the retailer made headlines for an unfortunate reason. During the Switch 2’s global launch, customers reported that a GameStop store in New York damaged some Switch 2 units due to receipts being stapled to the front of the packaging and puncturing both the box and the console’s screen. Affected Switch 2 buyers shared pictures of the damage inflicted by the stapled receipts, although the damage was limited to customers who had purchased from just one store. GameStop and Nintendo subsequently offered replacement Switch 2 units to all affected customers for free.

For example, customers who want to trade in an original Switch console will usually receive $75 worth of store credit, or $82.50 if they have a GameStop Pro membership. With the extra 20% from the Switch 2 receipt, these values increase to $90 and $99, respectively. By comparison, trading in a Switch OLED console will earn GameStop Pro customers up to $124.40 of store credit.
However, before trading in an original Switch console to cover some of the Switch 2’s costs, users should consider doing a system transfer between the Switch and the Switch 2 to ensure all save data and system settings from games like Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are carried over. After updating both consoles to the latest firmware, users can access System Settings on the original Switch and select the corresponding option to transfer data to the Switch 2. The Switch 2 will offer users a chance to receive Switch data during system setup.
Despite having a light lineup of launch titles, the Switch 2’s hardware upgrades are apparent from the start. It remains to be seen how many Switch 2 users will take advantage of GameStop’s trade-in offer.
