In Baldur’s Gate 3, there are many different pets and familiar companions that can be acquired by your Tav and their party. For the sake of clarity, this guide has not included the generic Familiars obtained through opportunities such as the Warlock Class, Spore Druids, or the Find Familiar Spell. In addition to this, focus only includes familiars / pet companions that are permanently recruitable, or at least can be utilized multiple times for a solid portion of gameplay, rather than a one-off instance.

During the prologue, players can encounter Us by freeing the brain from the body upon the Nautiloid. Us will then temporarily join the party as an allied follower, but will disappear once the ship crashes. As long as you kept Us alive up until the moment of the crash, you will encounter Us again in Act 2, at the Morgue within the Mind Flayer Colony. Upon freeing Us a second time, players will receive an item that they can use to summon Us once per short rest, making the little critter a permanent familiar that you can call upon.

Scratch can be encountered in the Act 1 Wilderness, near the locations of the Owlbear Cave and the Blighted Village. The approximate coordinates are X: 69 Y: 476, where Scratch can be found pacing and guarding the body of his dead master. By interacting with Scratch, you can possibly recruit him. This requires passing a dialogue check to calm Scratch down, and then offering to let him stay at your camp by following your scent. Choose dialogue options that make you appear as friendly as possible. Using Speak With Animals may make this easier.

If you succeed, Scratch will make his way to your camp upon the next Long Rest, where he will become a permanent camp companion and familiar that you can summon with his ball during your adventure.

During Act 1, players will likely encounter the Owlbear cave, either through one of the many side quests or through natural exploration of the Wilderness surrounding Emerald Grove. To secure the Owlbear Cub as a companion, players will first need to encounter the Owlbear mother inside the cave. Players can then either follow the Owlbear mother’s warning and retreat, or slay the Owlbear mother in combat.

Following the next Long Rest, the Owlbear Cub will appear in the Goblin Camp — due to Goblins slaying the mother if you chose to flee, or due to the cub wandering off if you slayed its mother. At the Goblin Camp, you can influence the Owlbear Cub to join your camp by interacting with it and either passing a check or using Speak With Animals. However, to ensure the Owlbear cub’s safety, you either need to deal with the Goblin Camp by slaughtering them, or choose to purchase the cub off Krolla for 500 Gold.

After this, the Owlbear Cub will appear hungry at your campsite during one of the following evenings. At this point, you will need to make decisions that involve feeding him and keeping your distance. He will then become a friend. The next Long Rest the Owlbear Cub will appear again, but injured. You will need to pass a check to help him out. Following this, the cub will permanently join your camp.

In Act 3, Dammon can transform the cub into a fully grown, battle-armored beast ready to aid your side in the final battle.

Lump the Ogre and his two companions, Fank and Chonk, can be discovered in Blighted Village, feasting on a Tiefling corpse. Players who enter this area will initiate a conversation with the trio. Lump will ask to see your Brand of the Absolute, and if you do not have one, will attack unless you pass a Deception or Intimidation check.

By passing another check or paying him off in Gold, you can recruit Lump and his companions to fight for you. Upon a successful check or agreement, you will receive Lump’s War Horn, an item that you can use to summon the Ogres into battle up to three times in Act 1. This can give you an edge in key fights and boss encounters.

To obtain Shovel as a familiar/follower, players will need the Scroll of Summon Quasit, which can be found in the Apothecary’s Cellar in the Blighted Village. The scroll then needs to be cast by a party member with any other Class other than Wild Magic Sorcerers, Shadow Sorcerers, or Storm Sorcerers. Following this, a Warlock, Wizard, or Sorcerer must speak with Shovel after completing the triggered dialogue.

Wizards can also scribe the spell scroll to add the Find Familiar: Cheeky Quasit spell to their Spellbook.

Connor is the deceased husband involved in Mayrina’s deal during the Save Mayrina quest involving Auntie Ethel in Act 1. When working through this quest, players can discover a wand called Bitter Divorce in Auntie Ethel’s Teahouse with the approximate coordinates of X: -417 Y: 604.

To gain Connor as a follower, players must defeat Auntie Ethel and save Mayrina. Upon using the wand on Connor’s corpse, he will be reanimated and Mayrina will be horrified. Players can then choose to gift the wand to Mayrina, or to keep it for themselves. By choosing the latter, they will gain the ability to summon Connor as a follower/familiar, letting him aid them in combat. While he isn’t all that powerful, he does play a good bait role in battles, taking enemy focus to allow you the opportunity to set up for a powerful opening play.

Players can then summon Quothe once per short rest to aid them inside and outside of battle.

The Shadow Lantern Wraith Familiar can be summoned via the Shadow Lantern. To obtain a Shadow Lantern, you will need to visit Balthazar’s office in Moonrise Towers and have Gale in your party. On the table inside Balthazar’s hidden room within the office, you will find key ingredients on the table: a broken Moonlantern and a dead pixie. Players can then use Gale to combine these two items (the same way you do for alchemy and changing colors of items with dyes). Doing so will create the Shadow Lantern, which has the Conjure Shadow Lantern Wraith action available once per Long Rest.

Players will encounter Kar’niss the Drider during the Act 2 storyline, either on their way through navigating the Shadow-Cursed Lands for the first time, or at the very least at Moonrise Towers during key moments/battles. However, depending on your choices, you can actually take steps to permanently recruit Kar’niss as a follower in your team for the entirety of Act 2. As he is a fairly powerful foe, he makes a brilliant ally for your Tav and companions.

To recruit Kar’niss, players must either ambush him and his party in the place of the Harpers at the beginning of Act 1, or encounter Kar’niss and obtain the Moonlantern from him one way or another. The easiest way is most likely by knocking him out in combat via non-lethal damage and then looting it from his unconscious body.

Next, you will need to leave him and progress forward. Near the Moonrise Towers waypoint, you should encounter Kar’niss and potentially some of the others who had been traveling with him, as Shadow-Cursed Undead. As long as you are at a higher level than Kar’niss (so, level 7 or higher), you can use the Control Undead spell to turn him into an ally and gain him as a follower.

To obtain Planar Ally: Cambion, players must acquire the Infernal Rapier. This item grants them access to the Summon Planar Ally: Cambion action, which can be used once per long rest. To obtain this weapon, players will need to have Wyll in their party when freeing Mizora from the mind player colony in Act 2, then pass the Persuasion check to convince her to reward them.

This weapon is also a brilliant addition for half-casters and melee weapon casters even without the spell, as it utilizes a Spellcasting modifier over a physical weapon modifier for damage/attack rolls. This makes it a solid choice for classes such as the Hexblade Warlock or Bladesinging Wizards.

While the Deva is available as a summon through the Summon Planar Ally Spell for Clerics level 11 and above, there is also a way to obtain this familiar as a Wizard. If you haven’t respecced any Origin Companions, then between Shadowheart and Gale, you have a fairly solid shot of making this one work.

As a Wizard, you can learn Sights of the Seelie: Summon Deva by scribing it from the Scroll of Beastial Communication. This scroll is obtained by reading the book titled Caution Before the Seelie, which can be found at the Sorcerous Vault in Act 3.
