EA Acknowledges Star Wars Battlefront 2’s Player Resurgence, But Not in the Way Fans Want

Summary

  • EA has finally acknowledged Star Wars Battlefront 2’s massive player resurgence.
  • The game saw a big spike in players last month as fans attempt to get EA to green-light a third game.
  • The official EA Play account has commented on the resurgence, but simply urged players to sign up to the service and jump into Battlefront 2.

Publisher EA has finally acknowledged the massive Star Wars Battlefront 2 player resurgence, but just not in the way that fans were hoping for. With Star Wars Battlefront 2‘s player count continuing to soar to new heights after eight years, many players are hoping that EA will officially green-light a new entry in the series. Unfortunately, the studio’s official response has been somewhat lackluster, as it has simply urged more people to jump into battle.

After releasing for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2017, support for Star Wars Battlefront 2 came to an end in 2020. While the shooter had a controversial launch, it received high praise from players after EA drastically altered the game’s progression system and toned down the intrusive microtransactions. Although DICE, the development studio behind the rebooted series, pitched a third entry in the series to EA, it was apparently rejected due to licensing costs. DICE has since gone on to continue the iconic Battlefield series, but a recent surge in Star Wars Battlefront 2 players has the community begging EA to green-light a third entry in the series.

After a month packed with fresh Star Wars content, 2017’s Star Wars Battlefront 2 has been experiencing a huge surge in players.

EA Finally Acknowledges Star Wars Battlefront 2’s Player Resurgence

After Star Wars Battlefront 2 experienced a massive player spike last month, the community has been eagerly anticipating EA’s response to the situation. Unfortunately, the first official word from the studio is somewhat lackluster, but it does show that EA is fully aware of what’s happening. In a new post on the official EA Play Twitter account, the studio said that Battlefront 2 “is the talk of the galaxy.” It then urged fans to join EA play and see what all the fuss is about. While there’s no denying that EA is fully aware of the game’s player resurgence, it’s clear that it would rather use it to promote EA Play, instead of addressing fans’ requests to make Star Wars Battlefront 3.

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise though, as EA has – without actually outright stating it – made it clear that Star Wars Battlefront 3 isn’t going to happen anytime soon. In the final days of May, it was revealed that EA had canceled its highly anticipated Black Panther game. A report from IGN revealed that EA was now solely focusing on a handful of its most iconic franchises, and Star Wars Battlefront was not one of them. While Respawn’s Star Wars: Jedi series is still being supported by EA, the studios only other franchises will be Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, and Apex Legends, as well as Motive’s unreleased Iron Man game. Although these plans could certainly change in the future, it’s clear that a third entry in the series won’t be happening anytime soon.

What’s most upsetting about EA’s refusal to green-light a third entry is that the original Star Wars Battlefront 2 devs are on board for a third game. Shortly after the game’s unexpected resurgence, a former developer took to Reddit and revealed that he and his former colleagues “want to get the gang back together” for another Battlefront game. Sadly, the decision to develop another game resides with Battlefront‘s rights owner, EA, and they don’t seem to be in any rush to give fans what they want.
