A Voidout is a common term that players might hear and fear in Death Stranding 2, and it’s essential to know what exactly a Voidout is and if one can be triggered in-game. A Voidout refers to the phenomenon when a BT devours a human being, which triggers an annihilating explosion that will leave a massive crater on the map, a crater big enough to wipe out entire cities.

Players can actually trigger Voidouts in Death Stranding 2, and if players want to see for themselves, or simply want to avoid one happening to them, then they are going to want to check in below to make sure they know everything they have to when it comes to triggering Voidouts with Sam’s death.
How to Trigger a Voidout in Death Stranding 2
What Does a Voidout Do in Death Stranding 2?
When players are in a BT-infested area, they can get caught by them, which will see tar-covered hands grab Sam and try to pull him into the tar so that he will enter their realm and spawn a Catcher. Catchers are larger BTs that are like mini-boss fights. If players successfully kill the Catcher, then the area will return to normal and disperse all BTs. However, if the Catcher manages to kill Sam or eat Sam, then it will trigger a Voidout.
Once Sam dies, he will be sent to a Repatriate screen where he can respawn, but the area where he died from a Catcher will now be a gigantic crater, marked on the map with a red circle and handprint. These craters are huge and cannot be accessed, meaning that if players are caught by a Catcher BT and create a Voidout, they will effectively and permanently shut down a section of the map. All Cargo will be lost in the Voidout and cannot be recovered, unless it was Cargo from a main mission, as that will result in an Order Failed screen that allows players to reload previous save data.
How to Avoid Voidouts in Death Stranding 2
Voidouts can be avoided most simply by creating a save file before entering a BT area, as saving is disabled once players are in a hostile zone. With a save file created, players will be able to reload a previous save if they accidentally get caught by the BTs and then devoured by a Catcher. Alternatively, players who are facing off with a Catcher have two options: stay and fight with blood weapons, or run away. If the Catcher dies, the area will be safe, but players can run away to return the area to normal.
