New Survival-Horror Game Has Enemies That Can Merge Together

Bloober Team has officially unveiled a deep dive into the combat and enemy mechanics of its upcoming sci-fi survival horror game Cronos: The New Dawn, including a detailed analysis of the creature mutation ability and how players will need to manage their approach to battles. Cronos: The New Dawn is currently slated to release Fall 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and audiences can now use the latest Dev Diary to prepare themselves for the horrors ahead.

The first trailer for Cronos: The New Dawn quickly drew comparisons to hit survival horror classics like Dead Space, with many happy to see developer Bloober Team offering up a new original IP after completing the Silent Hill 2 remake. Cronos: The New Dawn is described as a time-traveling sci-fi horror game where players will need to jump between the past and the future to collect lost souls and attempt to reverse a cataclysmic event. Along the way, audiences will encounter a number of enemies, with one particular mechanic making the fight against these creatures extra challenging.

Silent Hill, Cronos: The New Dawn Paint a Clear Picture of Bloober’s Future

After the Silent Hill 2 remake, Bloober Team has Cronos: The New Dawn in the pipeline, and it could cement the developer’s future.

In a Dev Diary video and PlayStation blog, the team behind Cronos: The New Dawn shares more information on the monstrous enemies, called Orphans, and gives insights into the best strategies for players to use against these mutated foes. The Orphans have a unique Merge ability that allows them to absorb the body and essence of their fallen comrades, meaning any enemy that the player defeats can Merge with a still-standing opponent to create an even more powerful monster. Previous gameplay of Cronos: The New Dawn gave players a brief glimpse of this ability, and Bloober Team has now warned players that the Merge will play a crucial role in how audiences strategize in combat.

Cronos: The New Dawn Combat Preview and Developer Tips

According to the developers, players will want to space out their attacks in Cronos: The New Dawn and lure enemies away from fallen opponents to prevent the Merge from occurring. Should a Merge start to happen, fans will want to quickly utilize their arsenal of weapons to interrupt the process and prevent a superior creature from forming. Players will have an impressive array of combat tools at their disposal, including the rapid-fire Javelin and heavy-duty Hammer, the latter of which will be key for close combat and stopping a Merge. Enemies will come in many forms, such as runners and Dopplegangers, so players will need to think fast and manage their resources accordingly while navigating the world of Cronos: The New Dawn.

As audiences count down the days to the release window for Cronos: The New Dawn, fresh insights into the enemy and combat mechanics continue to spark enthusiasm among survival horror fans. Interested players can stay tuned for more official insights and updates from Bloober Team ahead of the launch of Cronos: The New Dawn in 2025.
