After speaking with a seller, a gamer scored an original PlayStation console in its original box, along with games like Tomb Raider 2 and Monopoly, for just $100. The PlayStation console buyer asked other fans if their purchase was a good bargain, and many chimed in with their thoughts about how much Sony’s first console is currently worth.
Originally released in December 1994, the original PlayStation console was Sony’s entry into the video game market. The PlayStation emerged after Sony’s notorious falling out with Nintendo, which had tasked the former with developing a CD-based add-on for the SNES called the Nintendo PlayStation. As one of the first consoles to adopt CDs as its main gaming format, the PlayStation was home to exclusive titles like Final Fantasy 7 and the original Crash Bandicoot trilogy. Sony later released the first DualShock controller for the PlayStation in 1997, which included dual analog sticks and built-in vibration motors in each grip.

Sega’s recent leak of the company’s sales data shows the harmful effects on sales of games releasing exclusively on PlayStation consoles.
While some PlayStation consoles have been kept as family heirlooms, one gamer potentially secured a good deal with their latest purchase. On the PSX subreddit, a user named Mxlywxys purchased a PlayStation complete-in-box (CIB) for $100, which included the original manual, cables, six full games, and two demo disc compilations. The games that were part of the deal included Tomb Raider 2, Grudge Warriors, Nuclear Strike, Sammy Sosa Softball Slam, Monopoly, the first NHL FaceOff game, and demo discs from the PlayStation Underground and CD Interactive Sampler collections. The demo discs included some playable levels from Crash Bandicoot: Warped, Spyro the Dragon, Brave Fencer Musashi, and Bomberman World. However, only Tomb Raider 2 still included its original game manual, while the other PlayStation games were enclosed in different CD covers.
A PlayStation Fan Scores a $100 Deal for Console and Games
In response to Mxlywxys’ question about the worth of their PlayStation purchase, most Reddit users agreed that $100 was a steal after factoring in the condition of the console’s box and the game discs. One user remarked how Grudge Warriors by Take-Two was a PlayStation game that they had never heard of, making the purchase more novel. Other users pointed out that the cost of the PlayStation console in the late ’90s was $129 following a price cut from Sony, making Mxlywxys’ find all the more valuable.
Although many PlayStation games can be played on a Switch or other systems, Sony’s first console still holds a special place for some gamers. Fans continue to discover unique and valuable finds in the wild, and as the console recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, original goods have become even more valuable.
