Upcoming Xbox Game Pass Game Gets Special Shoutout from Phil Spencer

The upcoming Xbox Game Pass title Mixtape has recently received a special shoutout from Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer. In addition to highlighting one of its key features, Spencer described Mixtape as a “great Game Pass game” that he is eager to see launch in the near future.

The latest title from Australian studio Beethoven and Dinosaur, Mixtape was originally announced in June 2024. It’s described as a coming-of-age story about three friends reliving the defining moments of their youth, prompted by a magical playlist heard while en route to their final summer party together. Publisher Annapurna Interactive previously said that Mixtape was targeting a 2025 launch, albeit without committing to a more concrete release window.

Xbox Game Pass’ Potential Price Increase May Still Be the Greener Side of the Grass

It’s been rumored that Xbox Game Pass subscribers could be in for another price hike soon, but Game Pass might still be the best option for gamers.

A year following its announcement, Mixtape made a brief appearance at the latest Xbox Games Showcase. Shortly following the June 2025 event, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer highlighted the game during an episode of The Official Xbox Podcast. “I have to [mention] Mixtape, not only because it has a soundtrack that I just love, but also we have a relationship with obviously the creative team there,” the executive said, as first picked up by Pure Xbox.

Mixtape to Continue Annapurna’s Xbox Game Pass Support

Elaborating on that point, Spencer described Annapurna Interactive as “great supporters” of Microsoft’s subscription service, noting that Mixtape is another “great Game Pass game” that will further strengthen the publisher’s XGP catalog. Annapurna’s most recent title to debut on Xbox Game Pass was To a T, a narrative-driven adventure from Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi, which launched in late May 2025.

While Mixtape is still officially slated for a 2025 release, no specific availability details were shared during its brief appearance at the Xbox Games Showcase. With the year already halfway over and no release date in sight, it is plausible the game may not launch until the 2025 holiday season, assuming it doesn’t get delayed. Mixtape is far from the only confirmed day-one Xbox Game Pass title that’s still waiting for a release date. Other games in the same category include Descenders Next, Echo Weaver, and Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault, together with Tanuki: Pon’s Summer and Dead Static Drive.

Looking at the more immediate future, half a dozen titles are scheduled to reach Microsoft’s subscription service before the end of the month. The first of those is Volcano Princess, planned to debut on June 24. The console version of Against the Storm is then slated to arrive two days later, debuting alongside the remasters of the first three Warcraft games, which will launch via PC Game Pass. The final title confirmed to be part of the June 2025 Wave 2 lineup is Call of Duty: WW2, which is coming on June 30.
