The Sands of Time Remake Gets Encouraging Update

The remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is progressing smoothly, according to a development update from Ubisoft. First announced in 2020 with ambitions of a 2021 release, Ubisoft’s remake of its 2003 classic, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, suffered an indefinite delay as Ubisoft Montreal took over the project from Ubisoft Mumbai and Pune, reportedly rebooting development. The last update took place at Ubisoft’s June 2024 Forward showcase, where the remake received a 30-second CG teaser with a 2026 release window.

After years of dormancy during the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 generation, Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia franchise is seeing somewhat of a rejuvenation. Early last year, Ubisoft released the 2D Metroidvania Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, which impressed gamers and critics with its satisfying level design and fluid 2D platforming and combat. Later in the year, the 2D roguelike The Rogue Prince of Persia from Evil Empire, the studio behind Dead Cells, entered early access on PC. Perhaps the biggest Prince of Persia project currently in the works is Ubisoft’s ground-up Sand of Time remake, though with how rocky development has been and how much time has gone by with minimal updates, gamers familiar with the likes of Beyond Good and Evil 2 and the Splinter Cell remake are understandably concerned.

These are the key elements the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake must retain to capture the essence of the original classic and satisfy fans.

The official Prince of Persia Twitter account has good news for fans of the long-running Ubisoft franchise, as a recent tweet lets gamers know that Ubisoft Montreal is still “deep in the game” and that development of the Sands of Time remake is going well. No concrete information was shared in the tweet, but it was followed up by another message pointing fans of the series toward The Rogue Prince of Persia and its upcoming 1.0 release in the meantime, ensuring fans that it’s “built with the same dedication.”

Ubisoft Shares New Update on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake

It’s good to see Ubisoft being proactive in letting fans know that development is progressing well on the Sands of Time remake, but a tweet like this with no other solid information might be alarming to some. As of now, the remake still has its 2026 release window in play, which was recently narrowed down to the first three months of the new year. If it ends up slipping, it’s easy to see the game finally releasing later on in 2026 in the fall or holiday stretch. If one thing’s for certain with an update like this, it’s that a Beyond Good and Evil 2like fate seems unlikely for the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake at this point.

Summer Game Fest came and went without a Ubisoft showcase, so it may be some time before fans get another glimpse at the Sands of Time remake; an appearance at Gamescom or The Game Awards isn’t out of the question. With how well the remake seems to be progressing, fans may be in store for more than another cinematic tease the next time the game is ready to show back up.
