It seems that Rockstar may have once had very different plans for Grand Theft Auto 6‘s story, if a recent report is to be believed. Assuming Grand Theft Auto 6 meets its May 26, 2026 release date, franchise fans will have waited nearly 13 years to get their hands on the highly-anticipated open world game.
Originally, Grand Theft Auto 6 was supposed to launch in fall 2025. Unfortunately, Rockstar Games delayed GTA 6‘s release date to May 26, 2026, meaning fans will have to wait even longer than expected to play it. Still, the delay should ensure that when Grand Theft Auto 6 finally launches, it will do so in the most ideal state possible.

A leaker with a reliable track record gives an update about Grand Theft Auto 6 that could be a worrying sign for the highly anticipated crime game.
The GTA 6 delay will help Rockstar iron out any lingering issues that the game may be suffering from, but much of it is set in stone at this point. That wasn’t always the case. A report by Fravilys on Medium (as spotted by ComicBook) makes the claim that Dan Houser once had different plans for the GTA 6 story that were ultimately scrapped in favor of the version that will be in the finished product next year. Apparently, a previous version of the GTA 6 story featured three playable protagonists – a crooked cop, the cop’s son, and someone who was the “right-hand man” to a Colombian drug lord. Another version of the game supposedly followed a Vice City police officer looking to avenge her mother’s death and a drug smuggler. Finally, a third version of the game is said to have been about a police officer and an ex-soldier.
Scrapped GTA 6 Story Leaks Should Be Taken With a Grain of Salt
Fans should take these claims about previous versions of the GTA 6 story with a grain of salt. Dan Houser resigned from Rockstar Games in 2020, and his last major projects with the company were Red Dead Redemption 2 and its online mode. It’s entirely possible that Houser worked on multiple stories for GTA 6 during this time, but we don’t know for sure.
What we do know is what the GTA 6 story will be about when the final product launches on May 26, 2026. GTA 6 will follow Lucia and Jason as they get entrenched in Vice City’s criminal underworld. Lucia is freshly out of prison at the start of the game, while Jason is involved with drug runners and all kinds of other dangerous people. There has been some speculation that Jason may secretly be working for the police, but that remains to be seen. The GTA 6 story is sure to be full of twists and turns, but fans will have to wait until next year to find out more.
