With Death Stranding Ending, DS2 Could Tease Something Else Entirely

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is set to bring another chapter of Hideo Kojima’s wild post-apocalyptic world to life, with Sam venturing out into uncharted territory. After the events of the first game, Death Stranding 2 is teasing an even larger story this time around, and the expansion of the franchise raises plenty of questions about where the story will go from here.

A third Death Stranding game isn’t completely off the table. Kojima has mentioned in recent interviews that he already has ideas for a Death Stranding 3, even if the project never comes to life. The kicker is that Kojima wouldn’t be directing the potential project. As of right now, Death Stranding 3 seems to be a pipe dream, meaning that the franchise is more likely to end with the upcoming sequel. While this means any teasers regarding a third game are unlikely, that doesn’t mean Kojima Productions should avoid teasing other projects.

Why Death Stranding 2 is Likely Just the Beginning

Death Stranding 2 is set to expand Hideo Kojima’s strange world, but this sequel could merely be the beginning of a long franchise.

After Death Stranding 2, Kojima Productions Has Two Projects in the Pipeline

  • OD is an upcoming horror title co-written by Jordan Peele.
  • Physint is an espionage thriller expected to be reminiscent of Metal Gear Solid.

Although Kojima has teased both of these projects in the past, their anticipated launch targets are being kept under wraps. Both games promise something fresh and exciting from Kojima Productions, and once Death Stranding is wrapped up, it will be intriguing to see what else the studio has up its sleeve. If Death Standing is anything to go on, Death Stranding 2 is bound to feature plenty of hidden details, and Easter eggs regarding future games are definitely a possibility.

Death Stranding 2 launches on June 26, 2026.

Kojima Productions’ Eventual Move Away From Death Stranding is a Bold Risk

When Death Stranding first hit the scene back in 2019, it proved to be quite a divisive game. Kojima’s special brand of strangeness left a lot of gamers confused, but as the years have passed, Death Stranding has staked its claim as a beloved classic. After Death Stranding 2, if there are no new chapters on the horizon, that leaves Kojima Productions completely at the will of fresh projects. Of course, this is exciting for a variety of reasons, but it’s also quite risky to move away from a franchise that has become so well-known.

In common Kojima fashion, OD is shaping up to be a bizarre, wild ride, and there’s even less known about Physint. Death Stranding 2 offers a stage for Kojima Productions to tease these projects via Easter eggs, special mini-games, or simply a hidden trailer. Kojima is well-known for hiding unexpected surprises within his games, so there’s no telling what is being planted within Death Stranding 2.

OD is set to star Hunter Schafer, Sophia Lillis, and Udo Kier and is planned to be an Xbox exclusive.

Death Stranding Will Continue Beyond the Games

Even if a third Death Stranding game never becomes reality, there is at least comfort in knowing that the franchise is set to live on in a variety of compelling ways. The wait for Death Stranding 2 is coming to a close, and once the game is finally here, it will be thrilling to see what Kojima Productions has cooked up this time.

Sam is set to go on a mind-bending new journey, and with each new character and location visited, the fascinating lore of Death Stranding is going to expand even more. The franchise has come a long way since the first game’s launch, and it has set the stage for Kojima Productions to go all out with experimentation with its future IPs.
