God of War is one of the biggest and most popular franchises in Sony’s canon. Ever since its initial release back in March 2005, God of War has continued to appeal to audiences with its epic action gameplay, fantastic visual set pieces, and memorable characters. Even with a notable gameplay overhaul starting with the 2018 God of War title, this series has continued to be one of the most successful in gaming, which it re-established in 2022 with the release of God of War Ragnarok.
Recently, rumors surrounding a remaster of the original God of War trilogy on the PlayStation 5 have reached a fever pitch. This remaster collection was expected to be announced months ago in celebration of the franchise’s 20th anniversary, and although it has yet to be properly announced, excitement remains high for its potential release. If this God of War remaster collection truly exists, Sony could benefit from giving it a surprise release, perhaps even doing so sometime fairly soon.

Sony May Surprise Release The God Of War Trilogy Remaster
A God of War trilogy remaster may end up arriving with little fanfare because Sony may choose to shadow drop it. Given that it is a mere re-release of three previously available titles in the franchise, Sony may not feel a huge need to market it in the same way that it would a new mainline God of War title. Being that God of War is one of Sony’s biggest franchises, it is a series that has the potential to sell itself, meaning Sony will not have to go to great lengths to create a huge marketing campaign around it.
Previously, the God of War trilogy remaster was expected to be revealed on March 22, coinciding with the God of War franchise’s 20th anniversary celebration. Such a collection was not released, however, and Sony instead opted to release the God of War Ragnarok Dark Odyssey Collection, which featured a variety of weapon skins and armor inspired by the franchise’s working title as well as an unlockable skin from God of War 2. Still, rumors about the God of War trilogy remaster have persisted, and Sony could opt to surprise everyone by releasing it with minimal build-up.
God Of War Remastered Wouldn’t Be This Year’s First Big Shadow Drop
After all, gamers have gotten a major surprise release already this year, as Bethesda released The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered out of the blue back in April. Even with the minimal marketing beforehand, this proved to be a huge financial success, selling more copies in its launch week than the original 2005 game had in its first 15 months on the market. Tying it in with a day one release on Xbox Game Pass was only icing on the cake, and ensured that this new release would be played by many around the globe.
A similar strategy for the God of War trilogy remaster wouldn’t be the first time that Sony would surprise its players with an out-of-nowhere announcement in 2025. Earlier this year, PlayStation fans were surprised by the sudden announcement of another remaster with an acronym similar to God of War, Gears of War Reloaded, bringing a long-standing Xbox franchise to PlayStation for the first time ever. Sony also took a similar approach when announcing the release dates for its two major titles this year, Death Stranding 2: On The Beach and Ghost of Yotei, revealing their release dates even after seeing both games skip February’s State of Play showcase.
Rumors about the God of War trilogy remaster have persisted, and Sony could opt to surprise everyone by releasing it with minimal build-up.
Of course, all rumors surrounding the God of War trilogy remaster should be taken with a grain of salt. Sony has not officially announced this remaster collection, and Santa Monica Studios’ creative director Cory Barlog is known to be intentionally coy with new projects, meaning it shouldn’t be taken as fact that it truly exists. It would certainly be an exciting prospect, however, so here’s hoping the God of War trilogy remaster is real and ready to go sooner rather than later.
