One type of item that you’ll begin to find are gems. These come in all different shapes and sizes, but they all have one thing in common: high sell value. However, with such a high sell value, and some unclear descriptions, you may be wondering if it’s safe to sell gems in Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, or will you need them for something later in the game’s main quest.

What Are Gems and Crystals in Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma?

You’ll begin to get a lot of gems and crystals in the later stages of Guardians of Azuma’s main storyline. This is because some of them are used for forging, crafting, and upgrading different weapons and armor that begin to show up late in the game. These are often imbued with different elemental properties, which is where the gems and crystals come in. A lot of these valuable stones you can find in the game have clear element properties, such as Ice Crystal, Wind Crystal, and Dark Crystal. Others, such as Ruby, Sapphire, and Amber, have less clear uses. I’ve listed all of the gems and crystals in the game below.

Can You Sell Gems and Crystals in Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma?

It Depends!

There isn’t a clear yes or no answer here, as it depends on what the stone is, how many you have, and whether they’re likely to be needed in the crafting or upgrading of gear that suits your playstyle and requirements.

Starting with the type, you’ll typically find that weapons, armor, and accessories will require one of the elemental ‘crystals’ such as the Water Crystal and Earth Crystal. The type of elemental crystal that it requires will be dependent on the elemental damage or protection that the piece of gear focuses on. For example, the First Wisp Fans dual blades deal some additional fire damage to enemies and require Fire Crystals to both craft and upgrade.

As such, it’s recommended you always keep a relatively healthy level of these elemental crystals in case you decide to craft and regularly upgrade a piece of gear that requires them. These are more common to find, though, so if you do run out, you’ll be able to find more by mining ores and beating elemental enemies.

Some gems are less regularly used in gear crafting, such as the ‘core’ gems, diamond, sapphire, and emerald, to name a few. You’ll also find that you typically find fewer of these on your adventure, and while they can pop up from time to time in late-game crafting recipes, I was able to beat the entire main questline and still had one or two of each of these in my inventory.

Because of this, I’d suggest only selling gems if you’re really struggling for money. By the time you begin to come across these in the main quest, you should have a good number of monsters providing produce, crops growing in all villages, and a ton of villagers you can put to work fishing. By doing this, I was able to generate over 50,000 G per day consistently, and didn’t need to sell the gems or crystals I had in my inventory. Selling older gear you’re no longer using is a better option if you need some quick cash, rather than selling gems. However, if you do need the money, you can sell them, and you won’t be locking yourself out of any major questline.
