Toby Fox’s Deltarune is packed with hidden secrets, and Chapter 3 is no exception. While most players follow the main narrative path to the scripted conclusion, if you pay close attention and work through some of the challenges, you can discover a hidden ending and a secret boss.
Unlike previous chapters where optional bosses were hidden behind strange puzzles or alternate paths, Chapter 3’s secret ending is quite different. You’ll need to achieve S-ranks and complete minigames to become powerful enough to stand a chance at this fight. So, here’s a complete breakdown of how to uncover this ending in Deltarune.

Having a hard time beating the Roaring Knight Secret Boss in Chapter 3 of Deltarune? Here’s what to do to make the fight easier.
How To Get Chapter 3 Secret Ending In Deltarune
To unlock the secret ending of Chapter 3, you need to achieve S-rank scores in all three rounds of Tenna’s game show. Each S-rank unlocks access to a hidden room in the Green Room, where Kris can enter a special minigame. You can get these three key items from completing the minigames:
- Ice Key (Round 1)
- Shelter Key (Round 2)
- Shadow Mantle (Round 3)
Without these items, especially the Shadow Mantle, you cannot survive or defeat the chapter’s secret boss.
The above challenges are very easy to miss and need to be completed in a specific order to unlock the ending. If you miss any, you will have to restart from the beginning.
Completing S-Rank Rooms
After earning an S-rank in Tenna’s first challenge, go to the top-right corner of the Green Room and enter the door labeled “S.” Inside, you’ll find an abandoned dressing room and a minigame station. Initially, you can’t play until you exit and discover an Odd Controller on the floor outside. Pick it up, return, and interact with the game to begin.
If you fail to get an S-rank, you can pay 1,500 points to a Point Merchant located past the golden Tenna statue (south of the Green Room) to force an S-rank and gain access.
Getting The Ice Key
In the first minigame, you’ll control Kris alone without Susie or Ralsei. Your goal is to reach level 3 by defeating enemies, but you’ll first need to find a sword. Go south from the spawn point, then move towards the left and down multiple screens to find it hidden in a pond near some fish.
After leveling up, head to the eastern edge of the map where you’ll find two cactus plants. At level 3, you can destroy them and slash through trees blocking your path. After several screens, you’ll reach a treasure chest containing the Ice Key.
Getting The Shelter Key
Next, earn an S-rank in the second Tenna round and return to the minigame room. The map layout will now mimic round two of Tenna’s challenge. This time, reaching level 2 is enough. Grab your sword from a cave along the river, defeat enemies, and destroy ferns blocking your way forward.
Ride a series of rafts past waterfalls, using the Ice Mage’s freezing powers to solve puzzles. In the snowy maze near the end, track your Ice Mage’s movement to identify the correct path. At the end lies a glowing Shelter Key, essential for progressing further.

How to Get and Use the Shelter Key in Deltarune Chapter 3
The Shelter Key is one of three items required to unlock the secret ending of Deltarune Chapter 3, but it’s easily missed.
Getting The Shadow Mantle
Once both keys are obtained, complete the third round of Tenna’s challenge and gain access to the final version of the minigame. With Susie and Ralsei by your side, you’ll enter the Shelter using the key.
Inside, a boss fight awaits. Defeat it to claim the Shadow Mantle, a special armor that protects the wearer from instant death attacks, an essential item for surviving what’s to come.
Make sure you have space in your armor inventory before you open the chest. If not, you won’t be able to collect the Shadow Mantle.
Fighting The Secret Boss
With the Shadow Mantle in hand, reload your save from right after defeating Tenna but before facing the final scripted cutscene. Now, instead of losing to the Roaring Knight, you’ll trigger a special fight sequence where the battle becomes winnable if you’re wearing the Shadow Mantle.
You must survive the Knight’s brutal attacks and deal at least 25% of its total HP in damage. When successful, the fight ends early, leading to a non-standard ending and bonus rewards. Even pacifist players are required to attack once to complete this hidden route.
Who Is The Chapter 3 Secret Ending Boss
The Roaring Knight, long foreshadowed in Deltarune, is finally confronted as the secret boss of Chapter 3. Normally, the encounter ends in a scripted defeat. But with the right gear and preparation, you can withstand the Knight’s power and fight back, briefly turning the tide. This moment is pivotal, and reveals key lore hints and a glimpse into future battles in the chapters to come.
Deltarune Chapter 3 Secret Ending Rewards
Defeating the Roaring Knight gives you two major rewards, which are as follows:
- Shadow Crystal: A recurring key item from secret bosses in previous chapters.
- Black Shard: A chip from the Roaring Knight’s sword. This weapon can be equipped by Kris and deals massive damage to Dark-type enemies, making it one of the most powerful melee options available.
