For years, the LEGO brand was mostly dominated by Traveller’s Tales’ adventures. The studio took its tried-and-true LEGO formula to all sorts of franchises and delivered on many fans’ dreams. However, with the release of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga that seems to be changing as the brand branches out to even more studios and genres. With this new direction, one title that players are being treated to is LEGO Party. While it remains to be seen if LEGO Party is a success, the concept alone sounds like the perfect next step for the series.
Releasing later this year, LEGO Party is set to bring the world of LEGOs to the party game genre, which has been pioneered by Mario Party. It looks like it will have everything fans of Nintendo’s franchise would expect with a fun LEGO spin, and based on the studio’s previous projects, it will hopefully be the perfect title for game night. Even though LEGO may create sets marketed towards adults, the brand is definitely more catered towards younger audiences and families. Each title has recreated iconic franchises with cute and colorful graphics, has delivered exciting co-op experiences, and has created a gameplay loop that is perfect for anyone to jump in and out of. And throughout the years, it has only made that experience stronger.
That model has helped to create one of the biggest family-friendly franchises out there. However, the titles have seldom deviated from that mold as Traveller’s Tales has led the charge for years. There have been a few mobile games and smaller-scale experiences that have taken LEGOs to different genres, but for the most part, it has stuck within the licensed IP co-op titles. But now, LEGO is branching out with all-new family-friendly titles, and this LEGO Party game looks like an ideal next step.
LEGO Party Will Hopefully Go All in on the Concept
While players have not gotten to see a lot of LEGO Party yet, the concept alone sounds like a fantastic idea. For years, Mario Party has led the party game genre with a wide assortment of family-friendly titles. These games have definitely ranged in quality, but the majority of them have been perfect for game night. There is just something special about sitting around the TV, exploring a board with a cast of colorful characters, and competing in all sorts of mini-games with friends and family. That is exactly what LEGO Party is hoping to deliver, and if it can, it could be a fantastic ride.
As of now, LEGO Party seems to have everything that fans of the genre would expect with a LEGO skin attached to it. Not only could that be expanded with all of LEGO’s original sets, but it could also dive into its massive catalog of licensed IP to deliver a party game unlike any other. As long as it includes high-stakes mini-games, fantastic boards, and retains its tried-and-true family-friendly tone, it could be the next big thing. For now, players will just have to wait and see. LEGO has been trying a couple of different genres recently, with the likes of LEGO 2K Drive and LEGO Horizon Adventures being examples of this experimentation. And while both led to some decent experiences, nothing has really compared to what Traveller’s Tales accomplished. But with LEGO Party, it feels like the perfect recipe for success may have been discovered.
