Over two decades ago, Lionhead Studios’ Fable introduced players to the iconic Heroes’ Guild within its world of Albion — a place that served as a training ground, quest hub, and a home away from home for Heroes. Subsequent entries saw the decline of the Heroes Guild, with Fable 2 featuring the Guild in ruins and Heroes being almost mythical figures, and Fable 3 removing the formal structure of the Guild altogether until it was essentially absent. The next entry in the series (also considered a reboot) now appears to be somewhat picking up where the last entry left off in terms of the Heroes Guild, where it is little more than a memory surviving within the mind of Fable‘s new mentor-character Humphry.
Only a small portion of Humphry’s backstory has been revealed so far, and he is already shaping up to be one of Fable‘s most interesting characters. This is largely due to his status as a washed-up, retired Hero who seems to be one of the last remnants of the old world where the Heroes Guild thrived. While that creates a compelling entry point for Fable‘s narrative, it also sets up a unique gameplay opportunity the series has never explored before.

Humphry’s Role Suggests the Classic Heroes’ Guild Is Gone
Based on what has been shown so far in Fable‘s trailers, the Heroes Guild is gone, and Humphry’s presence in the game is proof of that. Just like him, with his weary-eyed, unkempt, peculiar persona, the Heroes Guild is nothing more than a thing of the past. Its glory days are gone, and Humphry’s are with it. His joke about an “exclusive club” in one of the trailers feels more like a nod to the Guild’s absence than an indication that it still operates, but he hasn’t given up hope yet, as he looks to Fable‘s protagonist to carry on its legacy.
Fable Could Let Players Create and Manage Their Own Guild
One thing that is clear about Humphry’s role in Fable is that he is set up to be a mentor of sorts for the protagonist rather than the star of the show, and that will presumably see the player character pushed to a position of leadership and increased responsibility. While Fable could very well still see Humphry redeemed as a Hero and positioned as a central figure, it feels more likely that he will serve as a support system for the protagonist. But that could open up some massive doors for Fable‘s gameplay.
With the protagonist of Fable‘s story seemingly expected to take down an encroaching threat, perhaps players will get the chance to create their own Heroes Guild now that the one of days past is long gone. This could see them recruiting NPCs through side quests or main story beats and training them (with Humphry’s help) in order to revive the Heroes Guild — or at least some semblance of it. Players could then potentially send these Heroes out on quests that would benefit the Heroes Guild as a whole in the long run, all while offering a unique gameplay loop the series has never seen before.

Of course, a feature like this would be even better if players could customize the look and feel of the Heroes Guild’s main hub to make it a true home, but even without a system like that, allowing players to build the Guild from the ground up by adding more Heroes to it would be a fulfilling side journey. Very little is still known about the game, especially now that Fable has been delayed to 2026, but the hope is still that it will introduce some fresh ideas to the series while still retaining its personality, and giving players the ability to create and manage their own Heroes Guild would be a great place to start.
