Rockstar has released a surprising update for Red Dead Online, which adds four brand-new missions for players to enjoy. With no prior announcement, the new Red Dead Online update comes as a pleasant surprise and may be a great reason to revisit the game.
Rockstar confirmed that development on Red Dead Online was largely winding down back in 2022, with no major updates to the title since. Its Western online title hasn’t quite had the same mass appeal as Grand Theft Auto Online, which continues to receive major updates after almost 12 years. Red Dead Online has gotten a few minor updates over the last few years, and some content has been reused for new seasonal events. However, for the most part, Rockstar has kept to its word about leaving it in the past.

Red Dead Online gives players a crazy amount of depth and customization, which is often very overwhelming.
That’s why it comes as such a surprise that Red Dead Online has shadow-dropped the new Strange Tales of the West update, which is available to all players now for free. According to Rockstar, it adds “four new adventures that require steely resolve and courage in the face of the odd, twisted, and downright supernatural.” The new 30-second trailer looks more than a little bonkers, showing off the four chaotic missions, which are named Strange Tales of the Plague, Strange Tales of Modern Science, Strange Tales of the Bayou, and Strange Tales of the Wilderness. Red Dead Redemption 2 has always had some supernatural Weird West elements, but they’re front and center here.

The appearance of the undead will come as great news to those who wanted a Red Dead Redemption 2 version of Undead Nightmare, which for the longest time has felt like a total pipe dream. This isn’t quite the same as a full-blown DLC, but it’s not a bad stand-in. Also notable is that the Strange Tales of the West update has the tagline “Vol. 1,” which definitely implies there’s more to come for Red Dead Online.
This new Red Dead Online comes as even more of a surprise on the basis that it’s no secret that Rockstar is finalizing the development of Grand Theft Auto 6. With Red Dead Online largely left to fend for itself over the last few years, it was a fair assumption for players to think the studio would have all hands on deck to polish the next Grand Theft Auto game as it prepares for its launch next year. Regardless, new Red Dead Online content will never be unwelcome.
