The Switch 2 has sold a jaw-dropping 5 million units in its first month, but it seems Nintendo didn’t mean to reveal that just yet. Few would be surprised that the console is selling remarkably well, especially anyone who couldn’t secure a pre-order and has been trying to get one since release. Still, the Nintendo Switch 2’s latest sales figures make its performance seem even more impressive, even if its manufacturer published them by accident.
Nintendo’s newest console was already a massive success before the new sales data came in. The Switch 2 sold 1.1 million units in one week in the U.S. alone, beating the PlayStation 4 to take the title of the country’s fastest-selling gaming system of all time. When those figures came out, gaming news channel Nintendo Prime responded by saying the console’s one-month sales “are going to be wild,” and that indeed turned out to be true.

Switch 2 Breaks an All-Time Nintendo Record
Nintendo states that its new Switch 2 console launch has set an all-time company record within the first few days of its worldwide release.
A now-deleted update on Nintendo’s official investor site, now preserved by Nintenderos, shows that it only took 26 days for the Switch 2 to pass the 5 million mark. For comparison, the PS5 sold 3.4 million units in its first month, taking roughly two and a half months to move 5 million consoles. It’s already come out that the Switch 2 has passed the PS5 Digital Edition’s lifetime sales in Japan, but selling 5 million systems globally in less than half the time it took the broader PS5 platform makes Nintendo’s success even more eye-watering. Still, some doubt the reliability of these numbers because the official site no longer lists them.
The Nintendo Switch 2 Has Reportedly Sold 5 Million Units in 26 Days
It may be that Nintendo removed the Switch 2 data because it wasn’t accurate. Alternatively, the 5 million figure could be a forecast, and the company took it down to avoid confusion. It may also be that Nintendo removed it to reveal the milestone in a separate announcement with more fanfare. Considering the console’s staggering success up to this point, it certainly seems possible that it could reach such a height so quickly, even if some feel that the Switch 2 lacks enough exclusive games to make it worth it to all players.
The Switch 2 itself isn’t the new platform’s only success story. Less than a month after its release, Mario Kart World sold over 1 million copies in Japan. That only includes physical copies, too, so the total number is likely much higher. Regardless of specifics, though, it’s clear that the Switch 2 and its games have been a big hit for Nintendo.
