Why Diablo Immortal’s Druid Is Its Most Versatile Class Yet

Diablo Immortal is about to launch its newest class, one that’s a staple not only in the Diablo franchise but throughout the history of role-playing games. The Druid is no stranger to the series, first appearing in Diablo 2 and decades later in Diablo 4, each time with an emphasis on the Druid’s animal shapeshifting and magical abilities infused with nature. Traditionally, in RPGs, Druids are a utilitarian class, capable of fulfilling many different roles by transforming into various animals and using their magic for offense, defense, or support. Diablo Immortal‘s Druid is no different, making it perhaps the most versatile class in the roster.

In a recent interview with Game Rant, Dablo Immortal senior narrative designer Ryan Quinn and lead artist Emil Salim went in-depth on the development process of the Druid and the team’s goals behind its design. In particular, the Diablo Immortal team aimed to emphasize the Druid’s hybrid playstyle, along with its extreme mobility on the battlefield.

Diablo Immortal’s Druid Can Play Like Any Class

Speaking about the Diablo Immortal Druid’s versatility, Salim remarked, “You can play any way you want. You can play like a Necromancer, you can play like a Wizard, you can play like a Crusader, you can play like a Barb. All of those playstyles can be included in just the Druid alone.” The developers noted that it’s also an ideal class for new or returning players, as the Druid allows them to experiment with each playstyle without having to switch classes. Quinn had this to say about the Druid’s versatility and fluidity as a hybrid class:

“You know, nobody picks up a Druid and goes, “Okay, give me a bunch of 20-second cooldowns and a lengthy period where I can’t do anything.” You want to be able to chain wolf into bear, into summon, into using another ability—and you want that to feel like it happens very, very seamlessly.

And I think if we hadn’t landed that, it wouldn’t feel like Diablo Immortal’s Druid, number one—and number two, I don’t know that it would feel like it was delivering on that “jack of all trades” fantasy that’s so core to why people love playing this kind of class. You know, the transforming, shapeshifting, summoning archetype.”

The Druid’s various animal forms all serve different purposes: the werebear form inflicts stuns and knockdowns while increasing damage reduction, while the werewolf form is adept at finishing off opponents with numerous interactions related to enemy HP falling below 50%. On top of the animal forms, Druids have access to myriad skills in their humanoid form, from summoning fiery tornadoes to healing circles of life magic. It’s safe to say that the Druid encompasses many class playstyles, leaving players to choose their own approach.

Diablo Immortal’s Druid Is Highly Mobile

Alongside the longer-term transformations, Druids also have access to intermittent transformations like Raven Swarm and Stag Charge, both of which are highly mobile shapeshifting forms that propel the Druid across the battlefield while dealing respectable damage. Quinn suspects that no matter the playstyle, most Diablo Immortal Druid players will dabble with these skills:

“And those skills behave a little bit differently—they’re part dash, part charge, part mobility skills—as opposed to your longer-term transformations. But I fully expect, whether it’s in PvP or PvE, that people are going to dip in and out of those various forms. Even if you’re a really werebear-focused or werewolf-focused Druid, you might have occasion to use some of the other stuff as well.

That fluidity of going back and forth between playstyles was really, really important to the designers working on classes. We didn’t want you to feel like you had to focus—we wanted you to feel like you could focus.”

Most of all, the team wanted to ensure that Druid players never felt locked into a specific playstyle, and instead aimed for players to have the choice to focus on playstyles to their liking. With its release just around the corner, players won’t have long until they’re deciding between a Druid that plays like Diablo‘s Necromancer, Barbarian, Crusader, or something in between.
