There are plenty of creative ways to take care of enemies in a game as boundless as Minecraft, but one incredibly lucky interaction shared by one fan online proves that it’s possible to kill bosses like the Wither using a wild dolphin. This might take the cake when it comes to one of the most unorthodox ways to finish off one of Minecraft‘s bosses, despite fans using plenty of strange methods in the past, ranging from explosive beds to traps that suffocate them with bedrock blocks.
The Wither is one of the strongest monsters in the whole game, and while it may not be as durable as Minecraft‘s terrifying Warden that patrols the ancient cities, players will need to go through a lot of preparation before taking it on. Unlike the Ender Dragon, which grants players the unique Dragon Egg block alongside the game’s iconically poetic credit sequence, the Wither is a totally optional boss that can only appear in the world if manually summoned by players. Much of the difficulty in fighting the Wither comes from the destruction it unleashes, and though the boss can easily tear up players’ creations during the fight, slaying it grants the Nether Star item that can’t naturally be obtained elsewhere.

A Minecraft fan showcases their impressive re-creation of the Ender Dragon within the overworld of the sandbox survival game.
To avoid collateral damage throughout their world, one player known online as Mustang1968op battled the Wither over the surface of a remote ocean biome. It’s thanks to this choice of setting that they were able to capture the extremely unlikely moment where a random dolphin attacked and killed the boss after the player had whittled it down to extremely low health. Minecraft‘s somewhat unpredictable Dolphins are programmed to retaliate and harm players if attacked. Though it’s rare for them to be attacked by another mob, the dolphin in this clip could attack the Wither since it took damage from the boss’s explosive blast attacks.
A Dolphin Killing The Wither Is Unlikely, But Not The Rarest Thing That Can Happen In Minecraft
Even trying to recreate this moment intentionally would likely prove pretty difficult, yet it still doesn’t rank at the top of the list of Minecraft‘s rarest occurrences. With Minecraft itself able to generate an essentially limitless variety of boundless sandboxes, the game’s huge variety of complex mechanics can overlap and interact in all kinds of surprising ways.
From world generation bugs that can cause ocean temples to generate in underground caverns to naturally-spawning monsters sporting full sets of diamond armor, Minecraft is full of rare possibilities that players might not see across hundreds or even thousands of hours. The game’s unpredictability, paired with the limitless potential it contains, is what helps keep things fun, no matter how many playthroughs a player might have under their belt.
