Jackbox’s New Collaborative Trivia Game May Be Its Most Challenging Yet

The upcoming Jackbox Party Pack 11 has been revealed to feature Legends of Trivia, a fantasy-themed collaborative trivia game inspired by Dungeons and Dragons and other popular TTRPGs. Jackbox Games has a long tradition of trivia titles, with one of their very first offerings being the off-the-wall quiz You Don’t Know Jack. With Jackbox Party Pack 11 and Legends of Trivia, the developer might just have created their trickiest and most mind-bending trivia offering yet.

In a conversation with Game Rant, Game Director Warren Arnold, himself a lifelong trivia buff, revealed that Legends of Trivia will feature some particularly challenging questions and twisty gameplay. “I would say it’s on the harder side,” Arnold said when asked about the difficulty of the game’s trivia questions compared to previous offerings such as You Don’t Know Jack and Trivia Murder Party. Even trivia buffs might find themselves challenged by Legends of Trivia’s offerings.

Collaborative Trivia Requires Challenging Questions

Arnold went on to explain that Legends of Trivia’s difficulty came about as a natural consequence of developing a trivia game that was collaborative, rather than requiring players to compete against each other like Trivia Murder Party. “Six people together are very smart,” Arnold said. “So we would ask a pretty difficult trivia question, but there was always one person in the group who knew it or could quickly get it.”

As a result, Arnold revealed, the game not only features higher difficulty questions but also contains several twists on the standard trivia format. Some types of questions include image-based trivia or other, more unusual questions. In other cases, the monster the players are fighting against might possess special abilities that affect how quickly the question must be answered, or how many players need to get the question correct, or something similar. Arnold couldn’t reveal too much, but he was confident that Legends of Trivia would feel fresh and new even to longtime Jackbox fans.

Making Collaborative Trivia Fun And Fulfilling Came With Its Own Challenges

The greatest difficulty Arnold and his team encountered when developing Legends of Trivia, he revealed, was making collaborative trivia feel fulfilling to each member of the team, without leaving anyone feeling lost, bored, or useless. Arnold drew from his own experience as a pub trivia enthusiast, where he often encountered situations in which one person would dominate and answer every question:

The hard thing was the collaborative trivia. If you’ve played pub trivia, you know, sometimes you get a know-it-all in your group. It can kind of feel like you aren’t needed. “Okay, well, I’ll go grab some beer for the table or something.” So it’s been making sure everyone has a way to contribute to the team.”

The team utilized a number of strategies to make Legends of Trivia feel fulfilling even for participants who might not know the answer to the game’s tricky questions. Each of the game’s playable characters, which include a knight, a spellcaster, a vampire, and more, have unique abilities inspired by TTRPGs such as Dungeons and Dragons. Even if players are getting questions wrong, they can still contribute to defeating monsters by utilizing their characters’ skills, as well as items the party might find along their journey.

Legends of Trivia is an exciting new entry into Jackbox’s long legacy of trivia, combining the difficulty of Trivia Murder Party with the collaborative nature of games such as Poll Mine. Trivia buffs can challenge themselves with all-new extra-tricky questions, while fantasy fans can enjoy the classic TTRPG feel when Jackbox Party Pack 11 launches in the fall.
