The Cardinal Sins of Fortnite’s Record-Breaking Blitz Royale Mode

Blitz Royale is a major shift from typical Fortnite game modes as matches feature only 32 players and take place on a condensed map. This leads to rapid encounters and much more aggressive gameplay. Rounds last under five minutes, and chests are closer together, so long rotations, drawn-out looting, and passive playstyles are not really viable. If players spend three minutes looting every chest in Retail Row, they’ll exit with full mats and purple gear, only to get jumped by someone who’s already at Level 7 from early eliminations.

Fortnite‘s Blitz Royale also introduces a new mechanic, Medallions, which provide unique buffs based on how many eliminations a player secures. These buffs scale with level and include perks like infinite ammo, shield regeneration, and mobility boosts. Players spawn in with a random Medallion at the start of the match, and they can get new ones from Golden Supply Drops as the match goes on. Effective use of Medallions is also incredibly crucial to securing a Victory Royale in the new game mode.

The Unwritten Rules of Fortnite’s Record-Breaking Blitz Royale Mode Explained

Fortnite has shaken up its Battle Royale formula with Blitz Royale, and there are a few unspoken rules that can help players thrive.

Focusing on Looting Instead of Stacking Eliminations

Looting for too long in Fortnite‘s Blitz Royale is a grave mistake. The map’s reduced size means opponents are never far away. And players who stand still while opening chests or organizing inventory are often punished within seconds, especially in the early game when most fights break out just seconds after landing. The risk is even higher when looting in open areas like the outskirts of POIs or hilltops. In those situations, it is imperative to use Shield Bubbles because they can provide a few seconds of precious cover while opening chests or reviving teammates.

Moreover, eliminations are the core progression mechanic in Blitz Royale. Each elimination contributes to leveling up the Medallion, which unlocks higher-tier Mythics, Exotics, and Boons. Surviving the storm does grant some points, but it is minimal compared to what’s earned through combat. Players who avoid early-game engagements end up with weaker loadouts and under-leveled Medallions in Blitz Royale.

The ones who dominate endgames are usually those who started fights early, stacked up eliminations, and snowballed their way through level-based buffs.

Ranged Weapons Aren’t Much Use in Blitz Royale

The compact nature of the Blitz Royale map favors close-range combat. Players frequently encounter others within seconds of landing, making SMGs and Shotguns far more useful than DMRs, Sniper Rifles, or Assault Rifles. In the final storm circles, spacing is even tighter, with limited visibility and frequent third-partying. Players using shotguns with fast reloads or high fire rates will have a significant advantage. Obviously, it’s important to have a varied loadout in any Fortnite mode, but close-combat weapons should always take priority in Blitz Royale final circles.

Ignoring Medallion Synergy With Loadout

Medallions are divided into four categories: Movement, Offense, Healing, and Wildcard, and each category currently includes three unique Medallions. These Medallions amplify a specific playstyle or weapon category. The Aspect of Combat Medallion, for example, increases ranged weapon damage. When paired with Fortnite‘s Assault Rifles or SMGs, this Medallion becomes a deadly asset. However, when used in a double-shotgun setup, its damage bonus goes to waste.

The Ringmaster Scarr Medallion, on the other hand, grants infinite ammo and a damage buff. This pairs best with the Twinfire Auto Shotgun because it allows players to maintain continuous fire without worrying about running out of ammo. Therefore, building around this Medallion with a Marksman Rifle would negate its full potential.

Players also cling to useless heals when Medallions offer better recovery. One common example is the Aspect of Siphon Medallion, which automatically restores a portion of health or shields after every elimination. With this Medallion equipped, carrying two healing slots becomes dead weight.

Those items will go unused because Blitz Royale’s fast-paced eliminations will keep the player topped up. Instead of holding on to extra heals, it’s much more effective to use that inventory space for mobility items like the Bass Boost Gloves. They allow for quick repositioning, aggressive pushes on weakened enemies, or quick escapes when outnumbered.
