Pokemon TCG Pocket‘s Eevee Grove expansion came out today, with a total of 69 unique new cards. Interestingly, this is the same number as Extradimensional Crisis and could be the sample size of mini sets moving forward, though the set at large contains a little over 100. Some fans hoped to see more of Eevee and its Eeveelutions, and despite good representation, one could argue that Pokemon TCG Pocket‘s Eevee Grove set has some weak Eevee cards, like the new Leafeon, and that it would have been a good time to release cards like Umbreon Ex and Espeon Ex. More importantly, there is a glaring omission in this set for its theme and cards.
Pokemon TCG Pocket‘s new Tsareena in Eevee Grove is a fantastic card, for example, and the expansion does have its fair share of very good cards. Penny is an interesting Supporter, Leftovers can become a meta Pokemon Tool, Umbreon and Espeon could both find their way into the meta as counters to powerful decks, and so on. Yet, Eevee is the Evolution Pokemon, and it evolves into several different critters that don’t always share an Energy type, but the set lacks support for multi-Energy decks – despite providing more options for players to use them.

Pokemon TCG Pocket Missed The Perfect Chance For a Multi-Energy Card
Pokemon TCG Pocket‘s card list for Eevee Grove includes Dragonite Ex, which, like the original non-Ex version from Genetic Apex, requires both Water and Lightning Energy to attack. This is a very powerful card with a lot of potential, but it’s still anchored to the usual Dragon-type limitation of needing two different Energy types to attack. Likewise, there are multiple new cards with the Sweets Relay attack, which deals more damage if it was used on the previous turn, but there are a few different types of cards that can use it, and they don’t always require the same Energy.
On top of that, the focus of the expansion and the deckbuilding fantasy it’s supposed to induce is that players can use up to four copies of Eevee in a deck (two regular Eevee cards and two copies of Eevee Ex), as well as multiple Eeveelutions. However, this is not really feasible outside of the current issues with RNG and Energy generation, meaning that the expansion was the perfect place and time to finally add a Supporter or Item card supporting multi-Energy decks in Pokemon TCG Pocket. It’s unclear when or even if this will happen, though.
Adding such a card to Eevee Grove would have been a love letter to the fans, not only because it would have enabled a much easier process of building and then playing decks that require two or even three different Energy types, but also because it would have been a perfect tribute to Eevee. Much like Eevee and Eeveelutions are supposed to be the main theme of the expansion, but there are not a lot of great cards for them, the set arguably drops the ball without a multi-Energy card to truly reshape Pokemon TCG Pocket‘s meta.
Why Pokemon TCG Pocket Needs a Multi-Energy Card
A card supporting multi-Energy decks should be high on the list of priorities for the game. It would create a lot of options, or enable existing ones, such as:
- Make Dragon-type decks more reliable and consistent
- Allow players to experiment with deck builds and combos
- Create a more diverse, possibly healthier, meta
- Make room for interesting designs for new cards, like a type-changing Kecleon, or a Castform that generates different types of Energy
The possibilities would be endless, and future Pokemon TCG Pocket sets should seize the chance Eevee Grove missed. This may not happen soon, however, so fans shouldn’t hold their breath about it.
Pokemon TCG has a few options for different types of Energy, and drawing inspiration from those would make sense for Pokemon TCG Pocket.
